U.S.-held "Summit for Democracy" thwarts democracy under pretext of democracy: Chinese FM spokesperson

BEIJING, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- The so-called "Summit for Democracy", held by the United States recently, sought to thwart democracy under the pretext of democracy, incite division and confrontation, and undermine the international system with the United Nations at its core and the international order underpinned by international law, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Saturday.

SINGAPORE, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- The organization of the so-called "Summit for Democracy" is part of a multi-faceted campaign by the United States to put China in a negative light, former Singaporean Foreign Minister Gorge Yeo has said.

"This is an information war for global public opinion which China has to fight. It is not a physical war but a battle for hearts and minds," said Yeo.

The local Chinese-language newspaper Lianhe Zaobao on Thursday carried a report on an interview with George Yeo, which was originally published by the English version of the Global Times.

US envoy conveys concerns to Cambodia about Myanmar, China

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) — A U.S. State Department envoy conveyed concerns to top Cambodian officials on Friday about bilateral and regional issues, including the crisis in Myanmar and the construction of Chinese military facilities at a Cambodian naval base.

The visit by Counselor Derek Chollet to Phnom Penh came days after the United States ordered an arms embargo on Cambodia, citing deepening Chinese military influence, corruption and human rights abuses in the Southeast Asian country.

Blinken To Visit Malaysia From 14-15 Dec

PUTRAJAYA (Malaysia), Dec 9 (NNN-Bernama) — Secretary of State of the United States (US) Antony Blinken will visit Malaysia from Dec 14 to 15.

Malaysian Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra) in a statement on Wednesday said Secretary Blinken, who is on his inaugural visit here, will be received by Foreign Minister Saifuddin Abdullah.

He is scheduled to call on Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob during the visit.

International and regional issues of common concerns will also be addressed during the visit, the statement said.

China's overall tariff level at 7.4 pct in 2021: MOC

BEIJING, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's overall tariff level was 7.4 percent in 2021, as the country took multiple measures to facilitate its trade sector, according to the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) on Thursday.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of China's accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

"Over the past two decades, China has always been a determined proponent of, an active participant in, and a significant contributor to the multilateral trading system," MOC spokesperson Gao Feng said.

China dismisses UK, Canada Olympic boycott as ‘farce’

BEIJING (AP) — China on Thursday dismissed the decision by Canada and the United Kingdom to join Washington’s diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympic Games as a “farce.”

China is also not concerned that the officials’ absence would spark a chain reaction, and numerous heads of state, government leaders and members of royal families have registered to attend, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said at a daily briefing.

Reports: Myanmar troops burn alive 11 in retaliation attack

BANGKOK (AP) — Myanmar government troops raided a small northwestern village, rounding up civilians, binding their hands and then burning them alive in apparent retaliation for an attack on a military convoy, according to witnesses and other reports.

A video of the aftermath of Tuesday’s attack showed the charred bodies of 11 victims, some believed to be teenagers, lying in a circle amid what appeared to be the remains of a hut in Done Taw village in Sagaing region.
