COVID-19 Cases In Malaysia Expected To Continue Rising – Health Deputy DG

PUTRAJAYA, Aug 6 (NNN-Bernama) — The daily COVID-19 cases are expected to continue increasing before the country’s vaccination rate achieves 80 per cent by the end of the October, said deputy Health director-general (Research and Technical Support) Dr Hishamshah Mohd Ibrahim.

He said currently, the rising new cases in the country were due to new variants such as the Delta variant.

Japan: IOC removes two Belarus coaches, sprinter says order came from 'high up'

TOKYO, Aug 6 (Reuters) - Two Belarus coaches who cut short sprinter Krystsina Tsimanouskaya's Tokyo Olympics have had their accreditation revoked and been removed from the athletes village, the IOC said on Friday.

Athletics head coach Yuri Moisevich and team official Artur Shumak were asked to leave the Olympic village, the International Olympic Committee said, days after they ordered Tsimanouskaya pack her bags and go to the airport.

China's defense ministry voices strong opposition against U.S. arms sale to Taiwan

BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of National Defense on Friday expressed strong opposition against the U.S. arms sale to Taiwan and vowed to defeat any foreign intervention and any attempts to seek "Taiwan independence."

Wu Qian, a spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, made the statement in response to an Aug. 4 announcement from the United States about an arms deal to Taiwan worth 750 million U.S. dollars.

China's Mars rover travels over 800 meters on red planet

BEIJING, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- China's Mars rover Zhurong has traveled more than 800 meters on the surface of the red planet as of Friday, according to the Lunar Exploration and Space Program Center of the China National Space Administration.

Zhurong has been traversing a complex terrain full of rocks, craters and dunes, and its rear hazard-avoidance camera captured a picture of the rover just moving across the rocks.

China appoints new military commander in restive Xinjiang

BEIJING (AP) — China has appointed a new military commander in restive Xinjiang where authorities have locked up more than a million members of Muslim minorities in what they call a bid to curb terrorism and radicalism.

Lt. Gen. Wang Haijiang will oversee a massive military presence in the sprawling northwestern region that borders on several unstable Central Asian states, along with Pakistan and Afghanistan, from which U.S. troops are withdrawing.

China pledges 2 billion vaccines globally through year’s end

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — President Xi Jinping pledged that China will supply a total of 2 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines to other countries through this year, increasing its commitment as the largest exporter of the shots.

Xi’s announcement was delivered Thursday at the International Forum on COVID-19 Vaccine Cooperation, state media reported.

Global stock markets mixed ahead of US jobs report

BEIJING (AP) — Global stock markets were mixed Friday as investors watched for U.S. jobs data for an update on how coronavirus flareups are affecting the world’s biggest economy.

London opened flat while Frankfurt gained. Shanghai declined, Tokyo advanced and Hong Kong was unchanged.

Wall Street futures were little changed while investors awaited July employment data for signs of how renewed anti-disease curbs might affect hiring and wages. They were encouraged Thursday by a decline in U.S. unemployment claims.

Thai officials raise security after Swiss woman found dead

BANGKOK (AP) — Thai authorities have ordered heightened security measures on the resort island of Phuket after the discovery of the body of a 57-year-old Swiss tourist amid signs of foul play, officials said Friday.

The woman’s partially clad body was found face down in water in a rock crevice near a waterfall Thursday afternoon by an island resident, police said.

From the condition of the body, it appeared she had been dead for several days, Phuket regional police commander Kitirath Phanpetch told local MCOT television.

Conditional Approval For Moderna Vaccine From Plant In Spain

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 (NNN-Bernama) — The Drug Control Authority (DCA) in its 362nd meeting today, gave conditional registration approval to Spikevax 0.20 mg/ml Dispersion for Injection COVID-19 mRNA Vaccine (nucleoside modified), also known as COVID-19 Moderna vaccine for use in the current disaster situation.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in his statement today said approval for the product was for product registration holder (PRH), Zuellig Pharma Sdn Bhd and the manufacturer, Rovi Pharma Industrial Services of Spain.

Asean Envoy To Myanmar Must Have Full Access To All Parties – Senior Minister Hishammuddin

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 (NNN-Bernama) — The newly appointed ASEAN Special Envoy to Myanmar Erywan Mohd Yusof must be given full access to all parties in the country in the effort to help address the current situation there. 

Malaysia’s Senior Minister of Foreign Affairs Hishammuddin Hussein in welcoming the appointment of Erywan, who is Brunei’s Foreign Minister II, said it is an important step towards the implementation of the consensus adopted at the ASEAN leaders meeting on April 24.
