China signals crackdown on privacy, data, anti-trust to go on

BEIJING, Aug 12 (Reuters) - China will draft new laws on national security, technology innovation, monopolies and education, as well as in areas involving foreigners, the national leadership said in a document published late on Wednesday.

The announcement signals that a crackdown on industry with regard to privacy, data management, antitrust, and other issues will persist on through the year.

Ship sailing under Panama flag runs aground in northern Japan, splits in two

TOKYO, Aug 12 (Reuters) - A Panamanian-registered ship ran aground in a northern Japan harbour, then split in two and was leaking oil, but there were no injuries among the 21 crew and the oil leak was being controlled with no signs it had reached shore, the Japan Coast Guard said.

The 39,910-tonne vessel, the "Crimson Polaris," was carrying wood chips when it ran aground on Wednesday morning in Hachinohe harbour. It managed to free itself, but due to poor weather was unable to move far and ended up anchoring about 4 km (2.4 miles)out from the port.

Lao PM says China taking concrete actions to deepen global anti-epidemic cooperation

VIENTIANE, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Lao Prime Minister Phankham Viphavanh has said that China is taking concrete actions to deepen the global anti-epidemic cooperation and contribute to the building of a global community of health for all.

Phankham made the remarks when addressing the handover ceremony for the fifth batch of China-donated COVID-19 vaccines on Wednesday.

Chinese Ambassador to Laos Jiang Zaidong officially handed over the newly-arrived vaccines to the Lao prime minister at the ceremony held here in Lao health ministry.

FM spokesperson urges relevant countries to respect China's judicial sovereignty

BEIJING, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- A foreign ministry spokesperson on Thursday urged relevant countries to uphold the rule of law, respect China's judicial sovereignty, and cease making irresponsible remarks.

Spokesperson Hua Chunying's remarks came after Canada launched accusations against China's verdicts in the cases of two Canadian nationals. Michael Spavor was handed an 11-year jail sentence for espionage, and Robert Lloyd Schellenberg was handed a death sentence for drug smuggling. The European Union and Britain have voiced their support for Canada.

South Korea: Samsung’s Lee appears at trial ahead of parole release

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A day ahead of his release on parole, Samsung scion Lee Jae-yong appeared in a South Korean court Thursday for another trial over alleged financial crimes — a reminder of his looming legal risks even as he leaves prison.

The Justice Ministry earlier this week decided to free Lee and some 800 other prisoners on Friday, ahead of a holiday on Sunday celebrating Korea’s independence from Japanese colonial rule at the end of World War II.

Trudeau condemns Chinese court's 11-year sentence in Canadian's espionage case

BEIJING, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said a Chinese court's sentencing of Canadian businessman Michael Spavor to 11 years in prison for espionage on Wednesday was "absolutely unacceptable" and called for his immediate release.

The United States embassy in Beijing also condemned the sentencing in a statement, saying that proceedings against Spavor and another Canadian charged with espionage were an attempt to "use human beings as bargaining leverage".

Myanmar receives funds from China for projects under LMC Special Fund

YANGON, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar received funds from China for 21 projects under the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) Special Fund on Tuesday, the state-run media reported on Tuesday.

An agreement on the transfer of the funds was signed by Myanmar's Foreign Affairs Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin and Chinese Ambassador to Myanmar Chen Hai.
