Nuke envoys of S. Korea, U.S. hold phone talks on peninsula issue

SEOUL, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Nuclear envoys of South Korea and the United States held phone talks early Thursday on the Korean Peninsula issue, according to Seoul's foreign ministry.

Noh Kyu-duk, South Korea's special representative for Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs, talked via phone with Sung Kim, U.S. special representative for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) policy.

Malaysia in political limbo as key ally pulls support for PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Malaysia plunged into a new political crisis Thursday after the largest party in the ruling alliance announced it will withdraw support for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and urged him to make way for a new leader.

The announcement could potentially trigger the collapse of Muhyiddin’s unelected government and fresh elections, although they are unlikely during a raging coronavirus pandemic. Muhyiddin and his allies did not comment immediately.

Japan: IOC’s Bach arrives in Tokyo; greeted by state of emergency

TOKYO (AP) — IOC President Thomas Bach arrived in Tokyo on Thursday to find Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihde Suga set to declare a state of emergency, which is likely to result in a ban on fans at the Tokyo Olympics as coronavirus infections spread across the capital.

Bach largely avoided cameras at Tokyo’s Haneda airport and, on a rainy afternoon, went to the International Olympic Committee’s games headquarters in Tokyo, a five-star hotel located in the center of the city. He is reported to need to self-isolate for three days.

Japan to declare virus emergency lasting through Olympics

TOKYO (AP) — Japan is set to place Tokyo under a state of emergency that would last through the Olympics, fearing an ongoing COVID-19 surge will multiply during the Games.

At a meeting with experts Thursday morning, government officials proposed a plan to issue a state of emergency in Tokyo from next Monday to Aug. 22. The Summer Olympics, already delayed a year by the pandemic, begin July 23 and close Aug. 8.

Over 20 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines transported from China to Pakistan

BEIJING, July 7 (APP): Over 20 million doses of Sinopharm and Sinovac vaccines have so far been transported from China to Pakistan to prevent and control Covid-19 pandemic in the country.

The Chinese vaccines included 14.5 million doses of Sinovac and 6 million doses of Sinopharm respectively.

A special plane of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) airlifted two million doses of Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine from the Beijing Capital International Airport to Islamabad yesterday, Qadir Bux Sangi, PIA Country Manager for China said on Wednesday.

5.7-Magnitude Quake Hits South Of Fiji Islands — USGS

HONG KONG, Jul 7 (NNN-XINHUA) – An earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.7, jolted south of the Fiji Islands, at 06:39:08 GMT this morning, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), said.

The epicentre of the quake, with a depth of 536.17 km, was initially determined to be at 23.1971 degrees south, latitude, and 179.6395 degrees east, longitude.

Vietnam's biggest city sees panic-buying over virus lockdown fears

HANOI, July 7 (Reuters) - Anticipation of stricter movement curbs triggered panic-buying in Vietnam's economic hub Ho Chi Minh City on Wednesday, the epicentre of its coronavirus outbreak, while media reported unrest at a city jail where dozens of inmates were infected.

The health ministry said outbound travellers from the city of 9 million people would be subjected to a week of quarantine and testing at their destinations, a day after dozens of flights were suspended to control the spread.

Hundreds of Afghan servicemen flown back from Tajikistan - Tajik security source

DUSHANBE, July 7 (Reuters) - Almost 300 Afghan servicemen who crossed the border into Tajikistan while retreating from Taliban militants were flown home in the early hours of Wednesday, a Tajik security source told Reuters.

Hundreds of Afghan security personnel retreated across the Tajik-Afghan border this month in response to Taliban advances in northern Afghanistan, underlining a rapidly deteriorating situation as foreign troops near a complete withdrawal after 20 years of war and with peace negotiations stalled.

Japan to initiate infectious diseases databank as long-term anti-COVID-19 measure

TOKYO, July 7 (Xinhua) -- The Japanese government will launch a databank of infectious diseases later this month to help fight COVID-19, starting with a plan to collect statistics on 10,000 COVID-19 patients by next March, local media reported Wednesday.

To help curb the COVID-19 outbreak, the government will first collect blood and saliva samples along with the treatment records of infected patients, and provide firms and universities access to these records in assistance to their researches on respiratory disease possibly from this autumn, according to project managers.

China blasts Japan for remarks on defending Taiwan

BEIJING, July 6 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday blasted Japanese deputy prime minister Taro Aso's remarks on defending Taiwan together with the United States if the island is "invaded".

Speaking at a regular press briefing, foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said, "Those remarks are extremely wrong and dangerous, as they severely violate the principles set out in the four political documents between China and Japan, and undermine the political foundation of China-Japan relations. China deplores and rejects this and has lodged solemn representations with Japan."
