Chinese social media giant WeChat shuts LGBT accounts

BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) — China’s most popular social media service has deleted accounts on LGBT topics run by university students and nongovernment groups, prompting concern the ruling Communist Party is tightening control over gay and lesbian content.

WeChat sent account holders a notice they violated rules but gave no details, according to the founder of an LGBT group, who asked not to be identified further out of fear of possible official retaliation. She said at least dozens of accounts were shut down, all at about 10 p.m. on Tuesday.

Chinese city on Myanmar border locked down in new outbreak

BEIJING (AP) — Authorities locked down a Chinese city bordering Myanmar on Wednesday, shutting most businesses and requiring residents to stay at home as a fresh outbreak of COVID-19 expanded.

Another 15 cases were found in Ruili in the last 24 hours, on top of six in the previous two days, health authorities in southwestern Yunnan province said.

Japan: Nissan CEO tells Tokyo court Carlos Ghosn had too much power

TOKYO (AP) — Nissan Chief Executive Makoto Uchida told a Japanese court on Wednesday that the company’s former chairman, Carlos Ghosn, had held too much power, failed to listen to others, and stayed on for too long.

Uchida said Wednesday that those were factors that led to financial misconduct charges for Ghosn. He was testifying as a witness for Nissan Motor Co., which as a corporate entity is standing trial on charges of having falsified securities reports in under-reporting Ghosn’s compensation. It does not contest the charges.

South Korea’s cases jump to 1,200 amid slow vaccination

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea on Wednesday reported 1,212 new cases, a steep rise in coronavirus infections unseen since the winter outbreak as it slips into another surge while most of its people are still unvaccinated.

Health experts say the government sent the wrong message by pushing for a premature easing of social distancing.

Packed restaurants, bars and stores and huge beer-drinking crowds at parks alongside Seoul’s Han River in recent weeks have illustrated how the country has let its guard down despite a slow vaccine rollout.

Floods Hit 40 Villages In Westernmost Indonesian Province

JAKARTA, Jul 6 (NNN-ANTARA) – At least 40 villages have been struck by floods, triggered by incessant rains since yesterday afternoon, in Aceh Jaya district, Indonesia’s westernmost Aceh province, the local disaster mitigation agency, said.

“We received a report on the 40 flooded villages. Now we are collecting data, as the number could increase,” Fajri, head of the agency’s Aceh Jaya chapter, was quoted as saying today.

Fajri said, the agency has sent a team to help mitigate floods in the affected villages, including those in Krueng Sabe and Setia Bakti sub-districts.

Russia backs ASEAN plan on tackling Myanmar crisis

JAKARTA, July 6 (Reuters) - Russia strongly supports the Southeast Asian diplomatic effort to end the crisis in Myanmar and has conveyed similar messages to the country's military leadership, its foreign minister said on Tuesday.

The five-point consensus agreed by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) bloc should be the basis by which the situation can be resolved, Sergei Lavrov said during a visit to Jakarta.

HK leader says 'ideologies' pose security risk, teenagers need to be monitored

HONG KONG, July 6 (Reuters) - Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said on Tuesday "ideologies" posed risks to national security and urged parents, teachers and religious leaders to observe the behaviour of teenagers and report those who break the law to the authorities.

The financial hub has taken a swift authoritarian turn since China's imposition of a sweeping national security law last year and changes to its political system to reduce democratic participation and oust people deemed disloyal to Beijing.

India's COVID-19 tally reaches 30.6 mln, Indonesia reports highest spikes in daily cases, deaths

HONG KONG, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Asia-Pacific countries witnessed surging COVID-19 cases on Tuesday as India's tally reached 30.6 mln cases while Indonesia recorded spikes in both daily cases and deaths.

India's total tally rose to 30,619,932 as 34,703 new cases were registered during the past 24 hours across the country, showed the federal health ministry's latest data.

"India reports 34,703 new cases in last 24 hours which is the lowest in 111 days," added the health ministry in a statement.

Philippines retrieves black box from military plane crash, death toll rises to 53

MANILA, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Philippine investigators have found the "black box" from the military plane that crashed in the southern Philippines on Sunday, the military chief said on Tuesday.

Armed Forces of the Philippines chief of staff General Cirilito Sobejana said that another critically injured soldier died on Tuesday, bringing the death toll to 53.

He said that seven of the 50 soldiers killed in the crash have been identified, while many of the victims were charred and "beyond recognition."
