China adds few babies, loses workers as its 1.4B people age

BEIJING (AP) — The number of working-age people in China fell over the past decade as its aging population barely grew, a census showed Tuesday, adding to economic challenges for Chinese leaders who have ambitious strategic goals.

The total population rose to 1.411 billion people last year, up 72 million from 2010, according to the once-a-decade census. Weak growth fell closer to zero as fewer couples had children.

Italy-Malaysia Trade Relations On Solid Ground, Says Ambassador

KUALA LUMPUR, May 10 (NNN-Bernama) — Italy’s Ambassador to Malaysia Cristiano Maggipinto is positive that bilateral trade between Italy and Malaysia will flourish this year despite the setbacks caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

He pointed out that in 2020, trade between the two countries recorded a contraction of only 7.5 per cent, lower than the 11.6 per cent decline registered in the overall trade between Italy and the ASEAN region.

Malaysia’s exports to Italy also had a very slight contraction of 2.1 per cent last year.

China foreign ministry says planned U.N. event on Xinjiang an insult

(Reuters) --- China's foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said on Monday that the use of the United Nations as a platform for a virtual event on the repression of Uyghur Muslims and other minorities in Xinjiang was an insult to the institution.

China has urged U.N. member states not to attend the virtual event, planned by Germany, the United States and Britain.

Thousands suspended at Myanmar universities as junta targets education

(Reuters) --- More than 11,000 academics and other university staff opposed to Myanmar's ruling junta have been suspended after going on strike in protest against military rule, a teachers' group told Reuters.

The suspensions come as the resumption of universities after a year closed due to the coronavirus epidemic prompts a new confrontation between the army and the staff and students who are calling for boycotts over the Feb. 1 coup.

South’s Moon hopes to restart N. Korean diplomacy with Biden

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea’s leader said Monday he’ll use his upcoming summit with President Joe Biden to push to restart diplomacy with North Korea, saying that the U.S. has opted for a diplomatic, phased approach to resolve the North Korean nuclear crisis.

The White House recently said officials completed a review of North Korea policy and suggested the Biden administration would seek a middle ground between Donald Trump’s “grand bargain” and Barack Obama’s “strategic patience” approaches as a way to curb the North’s nuclear ambitions.

Asian shares rise on US rally, jobs data signaling low rates

TOKYO (AP) — Asian shares mostly rose Monday, cheered by a rally on Wall Street as a grim jobs report signaled to investors that interest rates will likely stay low.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 0.6% in afternoon trading to 29,518.34. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 jumped 1.3% to 7,172.80. South Korea’s Kospi added 1.7% to 3,252.01. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng edged down 0.3% to 28,527.52, while the Shanghai Composite fell nearly 0.1% to 3,416.19.

The regional gains are coming despite a recent surge in coronavirus infections in Asia.

China: PIA transports one million doses of Sinovac vaccine to Pakistan

BEIJING, May 9 (APP): Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight No.6852 carrying a batch of one million doses of Sinovac vaccine left the Beijing Capital International Airport here on Sunday for Islamabad as the country is battling to control the third wave of Covid-19 pandemic.

“More flights of the national carrier are expected to airlift more consignments of Sinovac vaccines procured from China between May 13-15 and by the end of May”, Qadir Bux Sangi, PIA Country Manager for China told APP.

China says most rocket debris burned up during reentry

BEIJING (AP) — China’s space agency said a core segment of its biggest rocket reentered Earth’s atmosphere above the Maldives in the Indian Ocean and most of it burned up early Sunday.

Harvard astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell, who tracked the tumbling rocket part, said on Twitter, “An ocean reentry was always statistically the most likely. It appears China won its gamble… But it was still reckless.”

Chinese PLA provides COVID-19 vaccines to Pakistan Army

BEIJING, May 7 (APP): The second batch of COVID-19 vaccines assisted by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) was delivered to the Pakistani military.

The vaccine was provided with the approval of the Central Military Commission and at the request of Pakistani military and for the implementation of President Xi Jinping’s important declaration on making China’s COVID-19 vaccine a global public good, China Military Online reported on Friday.
