Pakistan most friendly country to China in world: Former Chinese diplomat

BEIJING, Apr 28 (APP): Former Counsel General of China in Karachi has said that he was very fortunate to have learned Urdu and dedicated his youth to the cause of China-Pakistan friendship.

An Qiguang, in his 80s has served in Pakistan several times and worked there for a total of 16 years.

Knife attacker wounds 16 children at Chinese kindergarten - Xinhua

(Reuters) --- A man wielding a knife wounded 18 people including 16 children at a kindergarten in China's southwestern region of Guangxi on Wednesday, state-backed media said.

Two of the children were seriously injured in the attack in the city of Beiliu, state-run Xinhua news agency said.

A suspect was arrested by police, Xinhua added.

Philippines tells China to mind its own business over maritime drills

(Reuters) --- China has no business telling the Philippines what it can or cannot do within its waters, Manila's defence ministry said on Wednesday, rejecting Beijing's opposition to its ongoing coastguard exercises.

Philippines Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana told reporters China has "no authority or legal basis to prevent us from conducting these exercises" in the South China Sea because "their claims... have no basis."

Hong Kong passes immigration bill, raising alarm over 'exit bans'

(Reuters) --- Hong Kong's legislature passed on Wednesday a controversial immigration bill, which lawyers, diplomats and right groups fear will give authorities unlimited powers to prevent residents and others from entering or leaving the Chinese-ruled city.

The government has dismissed those fears as "complete nonsense," saying the legislation, which will come into effect on Aug. 1, merely aims to screen illegal immigrants at source amid a backlog of asylum applications and does not affect constitutional rights of free movement.

Myanmar unity government tells ASEAN no talks until prisoners freed

(Reuters) --- Myanmar's pro-democracy unity government, formed to oppose the military junta that seized power nearly three months ago, on Wednesday ruled out talks on the crisis until all political prisoners are released.

The 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has been trying to find a path for Myanmar out of the bloody turmoil that followed the Feb. 1 coup and has called for an end to violence and talks between all sides.

Japan ratifies RCEP, world's largest trade deal including China, ASEAN

TOKYO, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Japan's upper house of parliament on Wednesday approved the world's largest free trade deal, which comprises 15 Asia-Pacific countries and the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The House of Representatives, the lower house of the parliament, gave its approval earlier this month.

The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) will create a massive free trade zone which will cover roughly 30 percent of the world's gross domestic product, trade and population.

Japan: Tokyo Olympics, IOC push ahead during state of emergency

TOKYO (AP) — Local organizers and the International Olympic Committee pushed ahead Wednesday with plans to open the postponed Tokyo Olympics in just under three months, unveiling the latest set of rule books to show how the games can be held during a pandemic.

The timing of the second edition of the “Playbooks” is not ideal. The version for Olympic athletes is out Wednesday, with similar guides for other participants out on Friday.

Asian shares mostly higher ahead of Fed meeting

TOKYO (AP) — Asian shares were mostly moderately higher in listless trading Wednesday, as investors watched for news out of a Federal Reserve meeting.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 added 0.4% to 29,104.51 in morning trading, while South Korea’s Kospi slipped 0.8% to 3,189.72. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 added 0.5% to 7,066.70. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng edged up 0.2% to 29,005.46 while the Shanghai Composite rose 0.2% to 3,448.25.

Analysts said Asian investors have adopted a wait-and-see stance ahead of the Fed meeting.

Japan sets June trial for Americans accused in Ghosn escape

TOKYO (AP) — The trial of two Americans accused of helping former Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn escape from Japan while out on bail will open on June 14, the Tokyo District Court said Wednesday.

Michael Taylor and his son Peter are accused of hiding Ghosn in a music box so he could flee to Lebanon in late 2019. The Taylors have been denied bail at the Tokyo Detention Center and not available for comment.

West opposes integrational processes on post-Soviet territory, says Russian defense chief

DUSHANBE, April 27. /TASS/: The West is actively opposing integration processes in the post-Soviet area, and the potential for conflict is building up around the perimeter of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said Tuesday.

According to Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin, Shoigu noted during the meeting of CSTO Defense Ministers, that the "spectrum of threats and challenges has widened significantly" in the Post-Soviet security bloc’s regions.
