China warns Washington not to boycott Winter Olympics

BEIJING (AP) — China’s government warned Washington on Wednesday not to boycott next year’s Winter Olympics in Beijing after the Biden administration said it was talking with allies about a joint approach to complaints of human rights abuses.

A Foreign Ministry spokesperson rejected accusations of abuses against ethnic minorities in the Xinjiang region. He warned of an unspecified “robust Chinese response” to a potential Olympics boycott.

Asian shares mostly higher after S&P record high

BANGKOK (AP) — Shares were mostly higher in Asia on Thursday after a mixed close on Wall Street, where gains for several Big Tech stocks nudged the S&P 500 to a second record high in three days.

Taiwan says India helped Paraguay get vaccines after China pressure

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan worked with other democracies to help its diplomatic ally Paraguay get COVID-19 vaccines after China put pressure on the South American country to ditch Taipei in exchange for shots, and India stepped in to help, Taiwan’s foreign minister said.

Chinese-claimed Taiwan has formal ties with only 15 countries, and Beijing, which asserts that the island does not have the right to diplomatic recognition, has stepped up efforts to coax them away.

Experts lay bare inequality, disorganization of U.S. health care

BEIJING, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Seven researchers with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) spoke up on the existing inequality and disorder in America's health care system, calling for reflection and changes.

The researchers, with various disciplinary backgrounds including medicine, anthropology, political science, health economics, science writing and medical humanities, put down their opinions in an article published Monday on MIT news website.

Japanese PM to decide on whether to dump Fukushima wastewater into sea

TOKYO, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said on Wednesday that his government will soon decide on whether to discharge treated radioactive water building up at the disaster-stricken nuclear complex in Fukushima Prefecture into the sea despite strong opposition by fisheries industries.

Suga held a meeting with Hiroshi Kishi, head of the national federation of fisheries cooperatives known as JF Zengyoren, over the issue at his office in Tokyo earlier in the day.

Indonesia landslides death toll rises to 119, dozens missing

LEMBATA, Indonesia (AP) — The death toll from mudslides in eastern Indonesia has risen to 119 with scores still missing, officials said Wednesday, as rain continued to pound the region and hamper the search.

The village of Lamanele on Adonara island suffered the highest losses with 60 bodies recovered so far and 12 missing. Mud tumbled down from surrounding hills early on Sunday, catching people at sleep.

China condemns 2 ex-Xinjiang officials on separatism charges

BEIJING (AP) — China has sentenced a former education official and a former legal official in the northwestern region of Xinjiang to death with a two-year reprieve on charges including separatism and bribe taking.

Sattar Sawut and Shirzat Bawudun are the latest of many Xinjiang bureaucrats, almost all members of the Muslim Turkic Uyghur minority group, to be sentenced on national security charges in what China calls a campaign against “two-faced officials” who are seeking to undermine Chinese rule from within the system.
