China cautions Japan ahead of US-Japan summit

Beijing, Apr 6 (AP-PTI) China's foreign minister has cautioned Japan against teaming up with the US to counter China, ahead of a US-Japan summit next week.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his Japanese counterpart in a phone call Monday evening that their two countries should ensure that bilateral relations do not get involved in the so-called confrontation between major countries, a Chinese Foreign Ministry statement said.

Myanmar’s online pop-up markets raise funds for protest

BANGKOK (AP) — With security forces in Myanmar having shot dead at least 570 protesters and bystanders in the past two months, many of the country’s residents see venturing out onto the street as a brave but foolhardy act.

Online, many have found a safer, more substantive way to show their defiance against February’s military takeover — virtual rummage sales whose proceeds go to the protest movement’s shadow government and other related political causes.

Asian stocks mixed after Wall St rally on economic optimism

TOKYO (AP) — Asian shares were mixed Tuesday after a Wall Street rally that reflected some optimism about the economy recovering from the pandemic.

Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 lost early gains and fell nearly 0.2% to 30,038.44 in morning trading. South Korea’s Kospi edged up 0.1% to 3,125.19. The Shanghai Composite slipped 0.1% to 3,479.84. Hong Kong trading was closed for Easter.

North Korea says it won’t participate in Tokyo Olympics

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea said it will not participate in the Tokyo Olympics because of the coronavirus pandemic.

A website run by the North’s sports ministry said the decision was made during a national Olympic Committee meeting on March 25 where members prioritized protecting athletes from the “world public health crisis caused by COVID-19.”

Vietnam picks ex-state security official Chinh as new PM

HANOI (Reuters) -Vietnam’s National Assembly confirmed Pham Minh Chinh, a career security official, as the south east Asian country’s next prime minister at an official ceremony on Monday.

The move completes the five-yearly renewal of Vietnam’s top four positions, as it looks to maintain economic growth, keep the coronavirus pandemic at bay, and balance relations with Beijing and Washington.

Japan expresses concerns to China about territorial waters, Hong Kong, Uighur situation

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi on Tuesday expressed strong concerns to his Chinese counterpart about Chinese incursions into territorial waters, the situation in Hong Kong and the human rights situation of China’s Uighur minority.

China’s extensive territorial claims in the East and South China Seas have become a priority issue in an increasingly testy Sino-U.S relationship and are a security concern for Japan.

Taiwan reports new incursion by Chinese jets into defence zone

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan’s Defence Ministry on Monday reported a new incursion by China’s air force into the island’s air defence identification zone, made up of eight fighter jets and two other aircraft, one of which flew through the strategic Bashi Channel.

Chinese-claimed Taiwan has complained over the last few months of repeated missions by China’s air force near the island, concentrated in the southwestern part its air defence zone near the Taiwan-controlled Pratas Islands.

Late last month Taiwan reported 20 Chinese aircraft were involved in one such incursion.

Malaysia's ex-PM Najib starts appeal against 1MDB-linked conviction, jail sentence

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysia’s Court of Appeal on Monday began hearing a bid by former Prime Minister Najib Razak to set aside his conviction on corruption charges in a case linked to a multi-billion dollar scandal at state fund 1MDB.

Najib, who was voted out in a historic 2018 election, faces several trials over allegations that $4.5 billion was stolen from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), a state fund he co-founded in 2009. He has plead not guilty to all charges.
