266 Chinese staff returns to Pakistan for construction of CPEC projects

BEIJING, March 28 (APP): As many as 235 personnel from PowerChina International Group Limited (PowerChina) and 31 workers from other companies, returned to Pakistan for China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects with 230 boxes of anti-epidemic materials and construction equipment.

Indonesia president condemns church attack as "terrorism"

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesian president Joko Widodo strongly condemned a suspected suicide bomb attack outside a church that wounded 14 people in the city of Makassar on the island of Sulawesi on Sunday.

In a video broadcast, he described the attack in the country with the world’s largest Muslim population as an “act of terrorism”, and urged people to remain calm, saying the government would ensure that everybody can worship freely, “without fear”.

Over 100 mln COVID-19 vaccine doses administered across China

BEIJING, March 28 (Xinhua) -- More than 100 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines had been administered across China as of Saturday, according to a press conference held by the State Council joint prevention and control mechanism against COVID-19 on Sunday.

Data released by the National Health Commission on Sunday showed that the total number of COVID-19 vaccine jabs administered nationwide had reached 102.42 million.

China saw a daily increase of more than 3 million doses ever since the country has initiated its daily vaccination report on March 24. 

China sanctions US, Canadian officials over Xinjiang

BEIJING (AP) — China announced new sanctions against U.S. and Canadian officials in a growing political and economic feud over its policies in the traditionally Muslim region of Xinjiang.

A statement from the Foreign Ministry on Saturday said the head of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, Gayle Manchin, will be barred from visiting mainland China, Hong Kong or Macao, and having any dealings with Chinese financial entities.

Suicide bomber targets Mass in Indonesia, 14 wounded

MAKASSAR, Indonesia (AP) — A suicide bomber blew himself up outside a packed Roman Catholic cathedral on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island during a Palm Sunday Mass, wounding at least 14 people, police said.

A cellular video obtained by The Associated Press showed body parts scattered near a burning motorbike at the gates of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral in Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi province.

The attack came as Indonesia was on high alert following the arrest of Aris Sumarsono, known as Zulkarnaen, the leader of Jemmaah Islamiyah in December.

Myanmar forces kill scores in deadliest day since coup

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) — As Myanmar’s military celebrated the annual Armed Forces Day holiday with a parade Saturday in the country’s capital, soldiers and police elsewhere killed scores of people while suppressing protests in the deadliest bloodletting since last month’s coup.

The online news site Myanmar Now reported late Saturday that the death toll had reached 114.

Thailand Reports 80 New COVID-19 Cases, One More Death

BANGKOK, Mar 28 (NNN-TNA) – Thailand today confirmed 80 new cases of coronavirus infection, mostly in Bangkok, and one more death, according to a report by the Centre for the COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

Of today’s new cases, 73 were domestic infections, while seven others referred to imported cases, the CCSA report said.

Forty-eight of the domestic cases were confirmed in Bangkok and 15 in Samut Sakhon, among other provinces, the report said.
