Junta’s foes woo ethnic allies with new Myanmar constitution

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) — Opponents of Myanmar’s military government declared the country’s 2008 constitution void and put forward an interim replacement charter late Wednesday in a major political challenge to the ruling junta.

The moves, while more symbolic than practical, could help woo the country’s armed ethnic militias to ally themselves with the mass protest movement against the military’s seizure of power in February.

Asian stocks follow Wall St. up on strong Japan, Korea data

BEIJING (AP) — Asian stock markets followed Wall Street higher Thursday after Japan and South Korea reported unexpectedly strong economic data and President Joe Biden announced a $2.3 trillion U.S. infrastructure spending plan.

Market benchmarks in Shanghai, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Sydney advanced.

Japan’s closely watched Tankan survey found business conditions improved more than expected. South Korea reported higher March export growth. House prices rose in New Zealand and Australian manufacturing expanded.

7 Hong Kong democracy leaders convicted over 2019 protests

HONG KONG (AP) — Seven Hong Kong pro-democracy advocates were convicted Thursday on charges of organizing and participating in an unlawful assembly during massive anti-government protests in 2019 that triggered a crackdown on dissent.

The seven include media tycoon and founder of the Apple Daily tabloid Jimmy Lai, as well as 82-year-old Martin Lee, a veteran of the city’s democracy movement. Lai had already been held without bail on other charges related to his pro-democracy activities.

Chinese Foreign Ministry calls on WHO to address possible coronavirus leaks from US labs

Cockpit Voice Recorder Of Indonesia’s Sriwijaya Air Jet Found

JAKARTA, March 31 (NNN-Bernama) — Another component of the black box of the Sriwijaya Air aircraft that crashed on Jan 9, the ‘Cockpit Voice Recorder’ (CVR), was found by the Indonesian authorities on Tuesday.

Indonesia’s Transport Minister Budi Karya Sumadi in a press conference today said the CVR was found on the seabed near Laki Island, in the waters of the Thousand Islands where the plane crashed.

It was found not far from where another black box component, the ‘Flight Data Recorder (FDR)’ found on Jan 12.

China Launches New Earth Observation Satellite

JIUQUAN, Mar 31 (NNN-XINHUA) – China sent a new Earth observation satellite into space, from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre, in north-west China at 6:45 a.m. today (Beijing Time).

The satellite, Gaofen-12 02, was launched aboard a Long March-4C rocket, and entered its planned orbit successfully.

The satellite will be used in land surveys, urban planning, road network design and crop yield estimation, as well as, disaster relief.

It was the 364th flight mission of the Long March carrier rocket series.

Myanmar's Suu Kyi 'looks healthy', lawyer says, as U.S. orders non-essential staff to leave

(Reuters) - Myanmar’s deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi appeared in good health in a video meeting on Wednesday, one of her lawyers said, as the United States ordered its non-essential embassy staff to leave after weeks of violence over a Feb. 1 coup.

The detained Nobel laureate, who has been held in custody since the military seized power, had wanted to meet lawyers in person and did not agree to a wide discussion by video in the presence of police, lawyer Min Min Soe told Reuters by telephone.

NASA urged to respect China's sovereignty, territorial integrity

BEIJING, March 31 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese government spokesperson on Wednesday called on NASA to respect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and urged the United States to uphold the one-China principle and abide by the three China-U.S. joint communiques.

Zhu Fenglian, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, made the remarks at a press conference in response to NASA listing Taiwan as a separate country on its official website.

China’s Huawei says 2020 sales rose despite US sanctions

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese tech giant Huawei said Wednesday it eked out higher sales and profit last year but growth plunged after its smartphone unit was hammered by U.S. sanctions imposed in a fight with Beijing over technology and security.

China’s first global tech brand reported sales of phones, network gear and other technology rose 3.8% over 2019 to 891.4 billion yuan ($135.8 billion), a decline from the previous year’s 19.1% growth. That was propelled by a 15.4% gain in China, while sales in other markets shrank.

Indonesia finds Sriwijaya Air jet's cockpit voice recorder

Jakarta, Mar 31 (AP-PTI) Indonesian navy divers have recovered the cockpit voice recorder of a Sriwijaya Air jet that crashed into the Java Sea in January, killing all 62 people on board, officials said Wednesday.

Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said divers retrieved the cockpit recorder at about 08.00 pm. Tuesday local time, near where the flight data recorder was recovered three days after the accident.
