Myanmar lawmakers say army guarding their housing after coup

YANGON, Myanmar (AP) — Hundreds of members of Myanmar’s Parliament remained confined inside their government housing in the country’s capital on Tuesday, a day after the military staged a coup and detained senior politicians including Nobel laureate and de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

11 U.S. Soldiers, Two Civilians In S.Korea Test Positive For COVID-19

SEOUL, Feb 1 (NNN-YONHAP) – Eleven more U.S. soldiers and two civilians in South Korea tested positive for COVID-19, the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) said today.

The USFK said in a statement that, 13 USFK-affiliated individuals were confirmed with COVID-19, after arriving in South Korea between Jan 15 and 29.

One service member and one dependent, arrived at Osan Air Base, on U.S. government-chartered flights from the United States on Jan 27. The Osan Air Base is located in Pyeongtaek, 70 km south of Seoul.

Hong Kong tycoon Jimmy Lai to wait for bail verdict in national security case

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong media tycoon and Beijing critic Jimmy Lai, the most high-profile person charged under the national security law, will remain in custody after the city’s top court said it would announce its verdict on his bail application at a later date.

Lai had been in custody since Dec. 3, except for when he was released on bail for about a week late last year. He was granted a HK$10 million ($1.3 million) bail by a lower court on Dec. 23 only for the Court of Final Appeal to bring him back into custody on Dec. 31 for another hearing.

Myanmar: Turkish embassy urges citizens to stay indoors

01 Feb 2021; AA: Amid a military coup in Myanmar, Turkey's embassy in the Southeast Asian country warned Turkish citizens Monday not to venture outdoors or travel unless necessary.

In a written statement, the embassy in Naypyidaw noted that a state of emergency had been declared in the country and that the armed forces had seized power.

WHO team in Wuhan visits provincial disease control center

WUHAN, China (AP) — A World Health Organization team investigating the origins of the coronavirus pandemic has visited a provincial disease control center that had an early hand in managing the outbreak.

The WHO investigators arrived in the Hubei provincial capital, Wuhan, last month to look for clues and have visited hospitals that treated many of the earliest patients and a seafood market where cases of infection with the then-unknown virus emerged in December 2019.

Military takes control of Myanmar; Suu Kyi reported detained

NAYPYITAW, Myanmar (AP) — Myanmar military television said Monday that the military was taking control of the country for one year, while reports said many of the country’s senior politicians including Aung San Suu Kyi had been detained.

A presenter on military-owned Myawaddy TV announced the takeover and cited a section of the military-drafted constitution that allows the military to take control in times of national emergency.

China: Special plane leaves with first batch of Covid-19 vaccine for Islamabad

BEIJING, Jan 31 (APP): A special Pakistan Air Force (PAF) plane with the first batch of Covid-19 vaccine doses left here for Islamabad on Sunday evening.

China’s State Councilor and Foreign Minister, Wang Yi during a phone call with Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi last week had promised to provide 500,000 doses of Covid-19 vaccine to Pakistan by January 31.

Beijing had asked Islamabad to send an airplane to get the vaccines.

Myanmar military denies coup threats over vote fraud claims

NAYPYITAW, Myanmar (AP) — Myanmar’s military on Saturday denied its chief was threatening to stage a coup over complaints of election fraud, saying the media had misinterpreted his words.

Political tension in the Southeast Asian nation soared this past week after a spokesman for the military, which had ruled Myanmar for five decades, said a coup could not be ruled out if its complaints of widespread fraud in November’s election were ignored.
