WHO teams visits Wuhan food market in search of virus clues

WUHAN, China (AP) — A World Health Organization team looking into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic on Sunday visited a market known to be the food distribution center for the Chinese city of Wuhan during the 76-day lockdown last year.

The team members were seen walking through sections of the Baishazhou market — one of the largest wet markets in Wuhan — surrounded by a large entourage of Chinese officials and representatives.

China launches 2nd Type 054A/P frigate for Pakistan: Global Times

BEIJING, Jan 29 (APP): China launched the second Type 054A/P frigate for Pakistan on Friday in Shanghai, as the Pakistan Navy Chief Naval Overseer highlighted at the launch ceremony that induction of the Type 054A/P warships will significantly enhance Pakistan’s maritime defense and deterrence capabilities.

The launch of the second Type 054A/P frigate was held at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai on Friday, reads a statement the Pakistan Navy sent to the Global Times on the same day.

Azerbaijani, Russian FMs Discuss Implementation Of Trilateral Statements On Karabakh

Myanmar military allays coup fears, says it will protect constitution

YANGON (Reuters) - Myanmar’s military said on Saturday it would protect and abide by the constitution and act according to law, a move that could allay concerns that the armed forces might attempt to seize power.

The statement comes a day after United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Western embassies in Myanmar expressed serious concerns about the possibility of army intervention in Myanmar, a country ruled by the military for 49 years after a 1962 coup.

Mongolia's new gov't sworn in

ULAN BATOR, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Mongolia's new government led by Prime Minister Luvsannamsrai Oyun-Erdene took the oath of office on Friday night.

The oath-taking ceremony was held in the country's parliament.

"The government will develop a comprehensive plan to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic, and start vaccinating our people within its first 100 days," the prime minister said at the ceremony.

China will no longer recognize UK-issued BNO passport

BEIJING, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- China will no longer recognize the so-called British National Overseas (BNO) passport as a travel document and ID document from Jan. 31, and reserves the right to take further actions, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian told a regular news briefing Friday.

The decision was made after the British government announced that it will begin accepting citizenship applications for BNO-eligible Hong Kong residents starting from Sunday.

WHO team visits Wuhan hospital that had early virus patients

WUHAN, China (AP) — A World Health Organization team visited a hospital on Friday where China says the first COVID-19 patients were treated more than a year ago as part of the experts’ long-awaited fact-finding mission on the origins of the coronavirus.

The WHO team members and Chinese officials earlier had their first in-person meetings at a hotel ahead of field visits in and around the central city of Wuhan in the coming days.

Philippines To Relax Ban On Foreign Travellers From Feb

MANILA, Jan 29 (NNN-PNA) – The Philippines will relax its ban on travellers, starting next month, from over 30 countries and regions, that have confirmed cases of more transmissible COVID-19 variants, presidential spokesman, Harry Roque, said today.

The ban on foreign travellers from 36 countries and regions, including Britain, China and the United States, ends on Jan 31. “The restriction remains until Jan 31, 2021, and would lapse after the date.”

Singapore: Oil prices rangebound as supply cuts offset virus worries

SINGAPORE (Reuters) -Oil prices edged up on Friday but traded in a tight range as demand concerns caused by new coronavirus variants and slow vaccine rollouts offset a cut in Saudi Arabian oil supply and falling U.S. oil inventories.

Brent crude futures for March rose 24 cents, or 0.4%, to $55.77 a barrel by 1126 GMT.

The Brent March contract expires on Friday. The more active April contract was up 26 cents, or 0.5%, at $55.36.

U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures rose 3 cents, or 0.1%, to $52.37.
