We must not go back to business as usual post COVID-19, says Commonwealth Sec-Gen

Chinese coast guard, navy vessels no longer encroaching Malaysian waters – Hishammuddin

KUALA LUMPUR, July 15 (NNN-BERNAMA) — Chinese Coast Guard and Navy vessels have not been seen encroaching into Malaysian waters of late, Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said. 

He said bilateral ties between both countries have been strengthened further in the 100 days since he was appointed to helm Wisma Putra. 

“One area I’ve had to work on since helming Wisma Putra is to improve Malaysia’s ties with China, India, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates… so when we talk about South China Sea, of course the relationship with China is important.

Tokyo declares coronavirus red alert as situation 'rather severe'

TOKYO (Reuters) - Tokyo raised its coronavirus alert to the highest “red” level on Wednesday, alarmed by a recent spike in daily new cases to record highs, with Governor Yuriko Koike describing the situation in the Japanese capital as “rather severe”.

The resurgence of the virus in Tokyo could add to the growing pressure on policymakers to shore up the world’s No.3 economy, which analysts say is set to shrink at its fastest pace in decades this fiscal year due to the pandemic.

China: US Xinjiang warning ‘bad for the whole world’

BEIJING (AP) — China’s government has warned it will protect Chinese companies after Washington said enterprises may face legal trouble if they help carry out abuses in the Muslim northwestern region of Xinjiang.

The U.S. warning came amid mounting tension with Beijing over human rights, trade and Hong Kong. It cited complaints of abuses by the ruling Communist Party against ethnic Muslims including mass detention and forced labor.

Russia-China trade turnover down 5.6% in January-June

BEIJING, July 14. /TASS/: Trade turnover between Russia and China dropped by 5.6% in January-June period of 2020 year-on-year to $49.15 bln, according to the data released by China’s General Administration of Customs on Tuesday.

Exports from China to Russia lost 6% in the reporting period to roughly $20.94 bln, while Russia’s imports to the People’s Republic of China decreased by 5.3% year-on-year to $28.21 bln.

Russia’s surplus account amounted to $7.27 bln in six months, down by 2.9% compared with the same period last year.

Azerbaijani general killed in armed clashes on border with Armenia

BAKU, July 14. /TASS/. Azerbaijani Army Major-General Polad Gashimov and Colonel Ilgar Mirzoyev were killed in armed clashes on the border between Azerbaijan and Armenia, Azerbaijan’s APA news agency reported on Tuesday, citing Deputy Defense Minister Kerim Veliyev.

"Major-General Polad Gashimov and colonel Ilgar Mirzoyev died heroically in the morning battles," the news agency quoted the deputy defense minister as saying.

Azerbaijan’s state news agency AzerTAc also confirmed this information.

Four Killed In Azerbaijan-Armenia Border Clashes

BAKU, July 14 (NNN-XINHUA) – Four Azerbaijani soldiers were killed, in a fresh wave of clashes on the Azerbaijan-Armenia border.

Three soldiers were killed on Sunday and one on Monday, in artillery fire near the northern Tavush region, Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Defence said.

According to the Armenian Defence Ministry, at least two Armenian police officers were wounded in the clashes.

The two countries have traded accusations, over which side started the fighting and violated the ceasefire.

Both countries said the situation is under their control.

Japan ministry warns electricity industry it will miss CO2 cut target

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan’s environment ministry warned on Tuesday that the electricity industry, which accounts for 40% of its carbon emissions, will miss its target for cutting carbon dioxide (CO2) by 2030, calling for it to take further measures.

The warning is based on the ministry’s annual review of whether the electricity industry is taking proper measures to achieve the goal to cut CO2 emission to 0.37 kg CO2/kWh by 2030.
