India: Noted scientist Govind Swarup dead

Pune, Sep 7 (PTI) Renowned radio astronomer and scientist Govind Swarup died on Monday night in a private hospital here in Maharashtra following illness, the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA) said in a statement.

He was 91.

Swarup, the doyen of Indian radio astronomy, was the founding director of the NCRA, which is part of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR).

India: Actor Malaika Arora tests COVID-19 positive

Mumbai, Sep 7 (PTI) Actor-host Malaika Arora on Tuesday announced that she has tested positive for COVID-19 and is quarantining at her home.

The Bollywood diva said she is asymptomatic and following all the required protocols.

Today I have tested positive for coronavirus but I want to inform you all that I am feeling fine, Malaika wrote in a statement posted on Instagram.

India: Kangana Ranaut given Y-plus category security by Centre

New Delhi, Sept 7 (PTI) Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut has been given Y-plus category security by central security agencies, officials said on Monday.

The decision has been taken in view of a renewed threat to the actor after she spoke about drug use among a section in the film industry following the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput.

The home ministry has decided to accord Ranaut Y-plus category security through one of the paramilitary personnel, a home ministry official said.

India: Criminal wanted for killing UP BJP leader held in Mumbai

Mumbai, Sep 5 (PTI) A 32-year-old criminal carrying a reward on his head was nabbed from suburban Mumbai on Saturday in connection with sensational killings of a businessman in Noida and BJP leader Rakesh Sharma in Hapur district of Uttar Pradesh, police said.

The accused, Pravin alias Ashu alias Akash Rajendra Singh, heads the infamous Mirchi gang, a crime branch official said.

The Uttar Pradesh police had announced a reward of Rs 2.5 lakh on Singh and his gang members, he said.

India: Two complaints seek FIR against Kangana over PoK comment

Mumbai, Sep 5 (PTI) Two separate complaints have been filed with the police here against actor Kangana Ranaut over her remark where she compared Mumbai to Pakistan- occupied-Kashmir (PoK).

While one of the complaints was submitted by Ali Kashif Khan Deshmukh, a lawyer, at Andheri police station on Friday, another was submitted at Azad Maidan police station by a city Congress functionary.

India: BJP condemns Sena protests against Kangana

Mumbai, Sep 4 (PTI) The BJP on Friday condemned Shiv Sena protests against actor Kangana Ranaut even as the former distanced itself from her remarks likening Mumbai to PoK and stating that she feared the metropolis' police more than the mafia.

The women's wing of the Shiv Sena had carried out protests against her in Mumbai and Thane, and had shouted slogans as well as slippered her photographs and effigies.

India: MNS asks police to charge Kangana Ranaut with treason

Mumbai, Sep 4 (PTI) A day after Kangana Ranaut courted controversy by comparing Mumbai to Pak-occupied-Kashmir, the film wing of Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) on Friday said she should be charged with "treason".

Ameya Khopkar, who heads the MNS film workers union, said they will not tolerate Ranaut's comments about Mumbai Police.

Chinese are encircling Indian sub-continent: Pawar

Mumbai, Sep 3 (PTI) NCP president Sharad Pawar on Thursday said the Chinese are "surreptitiously" encircling the Indian sub-continent, and India must keep a close watch on developments in Sri Lanka and Nepal.

He had invited former foreign secretary Vijay Gokhale and Air Marshal Bhushan Gokhale (Retd) for interaction with NCP MPs Supriya Sule, Praful Patel, Amol Kolhe and Vandana Chavan against the background of the stand-off in eastern Ladakh, Pawar tweeted.

Indian man held for duping US, Canadian nationals

Mumbai, Sep 2 (PTI) The Criminal intelligence Unit of the Mumbai Crime Branch has arrested a 30-year-old man who was allegedly part of a racket which duped US and Canadian citizens by posing as tax or immigration officials.

Nishant Shirsikar, a key accused, was arrested from Evershine Nagar, suburban Malad and Rs 40 lakh in unaccounted cash and four gold biscuits weighing 200 gms were also seized, the police said.

India: Adani Group to pick 74 pc stake in Mumbai airport

New Delhi, Aug 31 (PTI) Billionaire Gautam Adani's Adani Group on Monday said it has reached an agreement to acquire GVK Group's shareholding and control of Mumbai airport.

Adani Airport Holdings has "entered into an agreement to acquire the debt of GVK Airport Developers," Adani Enterprise said in a regulatory filing.

GVK Group holds 50.50 per cent equity stake in Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL). The debt will be converted into equity.

The two firms did not give further financial details of the deal.
