Indian satellite AstroSat makes rare discovery

Pune, Aug 24 (PTI) AstroSat, Indias first multi-wavelength satellite, has detected an extreme ultraviolet (UV) light from a galaxy which is 9.3 billion light-years away from Earth, the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) said on Monday.

A release from the Pune-based Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics said a global team led by IUCAA scientists have achieved the major breakthrough.

India: CBI starts probe in Sushant death case

Mumbai, Aug 21 (PTI) After the Supreme Court nod, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday started its probe into the Sushant Singh Rajput death case in the city as it collected relevant documents and reports from the Mumbai police, officials said.

A special investigation team of the CBI, consisting of officers, other personnel and also forensic experts, landed in Mumbai on Thursday evening to take over probe into the high- profile case which has received much media attention.

India: Rise in COVID-19 cases in rural areas worrying

Jalna, Aug 15 (PTI) Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Saturday expressed concern over the rise in COVID-19 in rural areas of the state due to the influx of migrants from Mumbai.

Speaking at an Independence Day function at the Collectorate, the minister said despite the rise in infections, the recovery rate in the state was high.

While the COVID-19 tally in Jalna had reached 3,000, more than 2,000 patients had recovered from the infection, said Tope, who is also the guardian minister of the district.

India: RBI to pay Rs 57,128 crore to govt

Mumbai, Aug 14 (PTI) The Reserve Bank of India board on Friday approved a dividend payout of Rs 57,128 crore to the government, a move in line with the Budget expectation but may not help plug a huge revenue hole created by the pandemic and slowing economy.

The surplus transfer of Rs 57,128 crore for the accounting year 2019-20 compared with Rs 1.76 lakh crore transferred last year, which included Rs 1.23 lakh crore as dividend and Rs 52,637 crore excess provisions identified as per the revised Economic Capital Framework (ECF).

India: Markets retreat for third day; bank stocks bleed

Mumbai, Aug 14 (PTI) Equity indices nursed losses for the third straight session on Friday as investors pruned exposure to banking, financial and consumption stocks amid negative global cues.

Weak macroeconomic data and a depreciating rupee further curbed risk appetite, traders said.

Tanking 663 points from the day's high, the 30-share BSE Sensex settled 433.15 points or 1.13 per cent lower at 37,877.34.

The broader NSE Nifty slumped 122.05 points or 1.08 per cent to close at 11,178.40.

India: Man sentenced to life in Maha for raping minor cousin

Jalna, Aug 11 (PTI) A district court here on Tuesday sentenced a 22-year-old man to life imprisonment for raping his minor cousin in Jalna district of Maharashtra.

District and sessions court judge Sunil Vedpathak awarded life sentence to the accused, who was charged under relevant sections of the IPC and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000.

India: Police recover explosives from naxal terrorist's hideout

Gondia, Aug 11 (PTI) Police on Tuesday busted a naxal hideout in Gondia district of Maharashtra and recovered explosives, including an IED and detonators, an officer said.

The hideout was located between Dhanegaon and Murkodoh villages in naxal-infested Salekasa tehsil.

The officer said the IED was planted near Daldalkuhi Spring Point apparently to ambush police personnel.

India: Dead patient's relatives ransack hospital in Navi Mumbai

Thane, Aug 11(PTI) Irate relatives of a patient who died at a hospital in Navi Mumbai ransacked the medical facility and also assaulted its staff on Tuesday, alleging negligence in treatment, police said.

They went on a rampage and smashed the fittings, fixtures and furniture of the hospital in Vashi and also beat up its staff, the police said.

An official at the Vashi police station said an offence of rioting has been registered people involved in the incident.
