India: Shiv Sena hits out at BJP over demand to reopen temples

Mumbai, Aug 31 (PTI) The Shiv Sena on Monday targeted the BJP for seeking reopening of temples in Maharashtra amid the COVID-19 crisis, and asked whether the NDA constituent will take responsibility if there is an "explosion" of coronavirus cases again.

The opposition BJP in Maharashtra last week staged protests outside temples in parts of the state, demanding reopening of the places of worship.

India: Woman sets herself on fire due to harassment by her husband and in-laws dies

Jalna, Aug 29 (PTI) A 35-year-old woman, who had allegedly set herself on fire due to harassment by her husband and in-laws in Maharashtra's Jalna district on August 11, succumbed to her injuries during treatment on Saturday, police said.

The deceased is identified as Asha Mittal.

As per the complaint lodged with the police, Asha's husband and in-laws used to cast aspersions on her character.

She had allegedly doused herself with some sanitiser and set herself ablaze at her residence here, an official said.

India: Nature should be nurtured, not just consumed: Bhagwat

Nagpur, Aug 30 (PTI) Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday stressed on the conservation of nature, saying it should be nurtured and not just consumed as is being done in the present world.

Addressing a programme organised by the Hindu Spiritual Seva Foundation through virtual mode to celebrate 'Prakruti Din', Bhagwat emphasised on the way of living followed by our ancestors who nurtured nature as an important part of their life.

India: Forex reserves surge by USD 2.296 bn

Mumbai, Aug 28 (PTI) The country's foreign exchange reserves rose by USD 2.296 billion to reach USD 537.548 billion in the week to August 21, RBI data showed on Friday.

In the previous week ended August 14, the reserves had declined by USD 2.939 billion to USD 535.252 billion.

The forex kitty had increased by USD 3.623 billion to reach a record high of USD 538.191 billion in the week ended August 7.

India: Probe `BJP angle' in Sushant case: Congress

Mumbai, Aug 28 (PTI) The Congress in Maharashtra on Friday demanded that the "BJP angle" in the Sushant Singh Rajput suicide case should be probed.

The state BJP, however, rubbished the Congress' demand and allegations.

State Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant claimed that the CBI was going to question Sandeep Singh, who was producer of the biopic "PM Narendra Modi", with regard to the drugs aspect of the case.

India: BJP stages protests to reopen temples in Maha

Thane/Pune, Aug 29 (PTI) Several BJP activists on Saturday staged protests outside temples in Maharashtra's Thane and Palghar districts and Pune city demanding the reopening of places of worship, which have remained shut amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

BJP MLAs, legislators, corporators and office-bearers led the protests in all cities of Thane and Palghar districts, with activists resorting to 'ghanta naad' (ringing of bells) and banging of plates outside temples.

India: Slain woman Naxal terrorist was carrying Rs 6 lakh reward: Police

Gadchiroli, Aug 27 (PTI) A woman Naxal killed by commandos of the elite C-60 wing in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra has been identified and she was carrying a reward of Rs 6 lakh on her head, police said on Thursday.

She was also facing more than two dozen criminal cases, they said.

The female Naxal was killed on Wednesday afternoon in an encounter with commandos of C-60 in the jungles of Mouza Dolandha. Her identity was not immediately established.

India: Woman Naxal terrorist killed in encounter in Gadchiroli

Nagpur, Aug 26 (PTI) A woman Naxal was killed on Wednesday in an encounter with commandos of the elite C-60 wing in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra, police said.

The encounter took place in the afternoon in the jungles of Mouza Dolandha in the adjoining Naxal-affected district, they said.

According to a release issued by the office of Gadchiroli SP, C-60 commandos of the district police were conducting an anti-Naxal operation in the forests when the exchange of fire took place between them and a group of ultras.

India: HC dismisses plea seeking declaration of PM CARES funds

Nagpur, Aug 27 (PTI) The Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court on Thursday dismissed a PIL seeking declaration of funds received by the Prime Minister's Citizens Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situation (PM CARES), a charitable trust created by the Union government amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

All reliefs sought in the plea are refused, a division bench of Justices Sunil Shukre and Anil Kilor said while dismissing the public interest litigation (PIL) filed by advocate Arvind Waghmare.

India: Thane court discharges 28 Tablighi Jamaat members

Thane, Aug 26 (PTI) A magistrate's court has discharged 28 members of the Tablighi Jamaat, including 21 foreign nationals, in two separate cases registered here.

The cases were registered after the controversial Tablighi Jamaat event in Delhi in March. The foreign nationals were accused of violating visa rules as well as norms put in place by the authorities following the coronavirus outbreak.
