India: Gateway protest against JNU violence: 17 including senior lawyer arrested

Mumbai, Feb 5 (PTI) At least 17 persons including a senior advocate, activists and journalists were arrested by the police in connection with a protest at the Gateway of India here last month against the violence at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), an official said on Wednesday.

All of them were released on bail after arrest for alleged unlawful assembly.

India: RBI keeps benchmark interest rate unchanged at 5.15 pc

Mumbai, Feb 6 (PTI) The Reserve Bank of India, for the second straight time, on Thursday kept its key policy rate unchanged at 5.15 per cent, maintaining its accommodative policy stance as long as it was necessary to revive growth.

The central bank retained GDP growth at 5 per cent for 2019-20 and pegged it at 6 per cent for the next fiscal.

India: 50-yr-old Dalit woman set on fire, 'critical'

Aurangabad, Feb 5 (PTI) A 50-year-old Dalit woman was set ablaze by a man when she tried to resist his move to enter her house in Maharashtra's Aurangabad district, officials said on Wednesday.

The woman, who suffered about 95 per cent burns in the incident that took place in Andhari village of Sillod tehsil on Sunday midnight, was battling for life at a government hospital here.

India: 86 yr old man gets three years in jail for molesting 15 yr old

Mumbai, Jan 31 (PTI) A special POCSO Act court here on Friday sentenced an 86-year-old man to three years' rigorous imprisonment for stalking and molesting a 15-year-old girl in September 2018.

Omprakash Lalaram Kulshreshta, the accused, was convicted under IPC section 354, 354-D (stalking and molestation) and also the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

India: Protesters gather outside Republic TV's office

Mumbai, Jan 30 (PTI) A mob of protesters gathered outside the office of newschannel Republic TV at Kamla Mill compound in central Mumbai on late Thursday night, the police said.

Earlier in the evening, messages asking people to gather at the English newschannel's office for a protest against "misreporting" of the firing incident outside Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi by a section of media were circulating on social media.

Police personnel were deployed in large number outside the channel's office here and there was no untoward incident so far, a police official said.
