India: Woman kills daughter-in-law

Palghar, Dec 15 (PTI) A 48-year-old woman allegedly killed her daughter-in-law by smashing her head with a flower pot while she was asleep at their residence at Vasai in the district early on Sunday, an official said.

The accused, Anandi Mane, a resident of Manickpur in Vasai, later surrendered before the police and was subsequently arrested, the official said.

India: Army chief bats for `leaner and meaner' force

Mumbai, Dec 14 (PTI) Stating that threats to national security are becoming more and more complex, Army Chief General Bipin Rawat on Saturday advocated a "leaner and meaner force" which can secure quick victories.

Delivering the inaugural Manohar Parrikar Memorial Lecture here, Rawat also said that India's response to terror attacks in Uri and Pulwama was much more "robust" compared to "inaction" after the 2008 Mumbai terror attack.

India’s Trade Deficit Widens To 12 Billion USD In Nov

MUMBAI, Dec 14 (NNN-PTI) – India’s trade deficit widened to 12.13 billion U.S. dollars in Nov, from 11 billion in Oct, the commerce ministry said, on Friday.

Exports contracted for the fourth straight month in Nov, while the decline in imports eased on sequential basis. However, the deficit narrowed compared to last Nov, at 17.58 billion U.S. dollars.

During the month under review, India’s exports were at 25.98 billion dollars, while imports stood at 38.11 billion dollars.

India: Activists appeal Maha govt to move SC against CAB

Pune, Dec 10 (PTI) Some social organisations in Pune in Maharashtra on Tuesday appealed to the state government to move Supreme Court against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill which was passed in Lok Sabha on Monday late night.

These organisations have sent a joint letter to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray through Pune district collector.

India: Two detained over theft of onions worth Rs 20,000

Mumbai, Dec 10 (PTI) Two persons were detained on Tuesday in connection with the theft of 168kg of onions worth more than Rs 20,000 here last week, police said.

The theft took place between the intervening night of Thursday and Friday in a market in Dongri in south Mumbai, an official said.

In total, 168 kg of onions, whose prices have skyrocketed in the recent past, making them a precious commodity, were stolen from two shops in the market, he said.

India: Pankaja Munde skips Maha BJP's core committee meeting

Mumbai, Dec 10 (PTI) Senior BJP leader and former Maharashtra minister Pankaja Munde on Tuesday remained absent from the party's state unit core committee meeting here, claiming she needed time to oversee preparations for her public address in Gopinathgad in Beed on December 12.

Munde, who has been holding a public rally every year on the birth anniversary of her father and former Union minister, the late Gopinath Munde, was absent from the division-level meetings of the BJP as well.

India: Domestic workers to protest against govt's labour code

Thane, Dec 11(PTI) Domestic workers will hold rallies across Maharashtra this week to raise concerns over the government's labour code and wage code, a member of an umbrella body of household workers said on Wednesday.

The Union Cabinet last week approved the Code on Social Security Bill-2019, which seeks to consolidate laws relating to social security of workers and subsume eight central laws.

Maharashtra Rajya Gharkamgar Union convener Rekha Jadhav told reporters here that the government was not making efforts to provide support to the domestic workers.
