Indian Rupee plummets amid Kashmir tension

Mumbai, Aug 5 (PTI) The rupee was trading down by 77 paise at 70.37 against the American currency on Monday, amid uncertainty over Kashmir Issue and US-China trade related concerns.

In a highly volatile trade, the rupee opened at 70.20 at the interbank forex market and touched a low of 70.59 and a high of 70.18 against the American currency.

The domestic currency was trading at 70.37 against the American unit, down 77 paise over its previous closing price at 1211 hours.

The rupee had settled at 69.60 against the US dollar on Friday.

Security lockdown in place in Indian-controlled Kashmir

SRINAGAR, India (AP) — An indefinite security lockdown was in place in the Indian-controlled portion of divided Kashmir on Monday, stranding millions in their homes as authorities also suspended some internet services and deployed thousands of fresh troops around the increasingly tense region.

Meanwhile, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a Cabinet meeting at his residence in New Delhi amid speculation that the government could announce changes to how the Himalayan territory is administered.

Kashmiri leaders 'under house arrest', phone, internet disconnected

Sections of the Indian Administered Kashmir have been placed under lockdown, telephone and internet services have been disconnected, and some of the pro-India local leaders including former chief ministers Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah have been put under house arrest.

This follows deployment of additional 10,000 troops in Kashmir valley, closure of educational institutions and an order for Hindu pilgrims and tourists to leave the valley, currently under President Rule.

PAK: Firdous urges political leadership to take unanimous stand to expose Indian state terrorism in IOK

ISLAMABAD, Aug 04 (APP): Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan said on Sunday that political leadership of the country should take a unanimous stand to expose Indian state terrorism in occupied Kashmir.

In a tweet, she said that this was not time of politics, rather it was time to stand united like a rock on the issue of national security and Kashmiris’ right to self- determination.

She urged political leadership to give a message of unity and consensus on national issue by rising above political interests.

PAKISTAN: PM condemns Indian LoC violations; urges UNSC to take notice

ISLAMABAD, Aug 4 (APP): Prime Minister Imran Khan Sunday condemned India’s attack on the innocent civilians across the Line of Control (LoC) and its use of cluster munitions in violation of international humanitarian law.

The prime minister urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to take note of this international threat to peace and security.

In a series of tweets, the prime minister said India was also committing violation of its own commitments under the 1983 Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons.

India: HM Amit Shah holds meeting with top security brass

New Delhi, Aug 4 (PTI) Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday held a meeting with top security officials and is believed to have discussed the prevailing situation in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.

The hour-long meeting was attended by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba and other senior officials.

India: Present times witnessing belligerent behaviour by few; CJI

Guwahati, Aug 4 (PTI) Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi on Sunday said the present times are witnessing "belligerent and reckless behaviour" by a few individuals and some groups.

He, however, expressed optimism that such developments are just "exceptions" and will be defeated by the strong traditions of the country's legal institutions.

India: Unnao rape victim accident case: CBI searches multiple locations

New Delhi, Aug 4 (PTI) The CBI is carrying out searches at multiple locations in connection with the Unnao rape victim's accident case, officials said Sunday.

The details of searches have been withheld as the operation is going on but it is understood that 17 places are being searched, they said.

On July 30, the car in which the victim, who has accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar of raping her as a teenager, was hit by an over-speeding truck in Rae Bareli.

Two of the victim's aunts were killed, while she and her lawyer were critically injured in the accident.
