India: 222 lions died in Gir forest region in 2017-19: Minister

Gandhinagar, Jul 16 (PTI) As many as 222 lions died, most of them due to natural causes, in the Gir forest region in Gujarat in the last two years, the Legislative Assembly was told Tuesday.

Among them, only 23 lions died because of "unnatural" causes such as getting hit by trains or falling into wells between June 2017 and May 2019.

Delhi govt schools launch Happiness Festival

New Delhi, Jul 17 (PTI) Delhi government launched "Happiness Utsav" in its schools Tuesday to celebrate completion of a year of introduction of its happiness curriculum.

During the festival, the first 50 minutes of each day, all children studying in Delhi govt schools will take part in various activities.

"The Delhi government is celebrating the Happiness Utsav to mark the first year of the curriculum's launch. On Day 1, the children were involved in a drawing mela, where they drew on the subject 'What makes you happy?'," Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said.

India: Cong protest University move to include RSS chapter

Nagpur, Jul 17 (PTI) Congress workers Tuesday protested at the Nagpur University here against its decision to include a chapter on the 'role of RSS in nation building' in BA course.

The Rashtrasant Tukdoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) recently announced that it would include a chapter on the 'role of RSS in nation building' in its syllabus for second year of BA (History) course from this academic year.

The activists led by party spokesperson Atul Londhe later held discussions with RTMNU Vice Chancellor S P Kane in his chambers.

India: Man arrested for raping teen

Hyderabad, July 16 (PTI): A 25-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl under the pretext of marrying her at Ameenpur near here, police said Tuesday.

The accused, who stays near the victim's house, befriended her and later promised to marry her, the police said.

On July 11, he took her on a two-wheeler to a nearby godown and had a physical relationship with her, they said.

The teenager informed the matter to her mother after which she lodged a complaint with the police.

India: Man arrested for molesting ex-DIG's daughter

Noida (UP), Jul 16 (PTI) The daughter of a former deputy inspector general of police was allegedly molested on Tuesday near her college in Greater Noida by a man, who has been arrested, officials said.

The incident took place outside a hotel management college under Beta 2 police station limits in the afternoon, they said.

The girl, who is pursuing a course in hotel management from the college, was molested by the accused. She soon called up the police on Dial 100 and a police response vehicle (PRV) reached the spot immediately, a police spokesperson said.

India: CBI searches former SP MP's premises in UP

New Delhi, Jul 17 (PTI) The CBI on Wednesday searched the premises of former Samajwadi Party MP Ateeq Ahmad and others in Allahabad and Lucknow in a case related to the abduction and assault of a businessman, officials here said.

The searches are being conducted at six places in the two Uttar Pradesh cities, they said, adding that details would be given later.

The CBI last month registered a case against Ahmad for allegedly assaulting and abducting real estate dealer Mohit Jaiswal in December 2018 while he was in Deoria Jail.

Rescuers look for survivors after building collapse in India

MUMBAI, India (AP) — Rescuers cleared debris and used sniffer dogs Wednesday to find possible survivors under the rubble of a dilapidated building that collapsed in India’s financial capital of Mumbai. At least 12 people were killed, and several are still feared trapped.

Dozens of rescuers worked overnight at the site where they have pulled out 11 survivors since the four-story building collapsed Tuesday, fire official Ashok Talpade said early Wednesday. The survivors included a child who was treated at a hospital and later allowed to go home. Others remain hospitalized.

India: Hindu student asked to donate Quran for offensive post

A local court in Jharkhand’s Ranchi has granted bail to 19-year-old Richa Bharti, a college student arrested for sharing an offensive social media post targeting Muslims.

According to The Hindu, Ms. Bharti, a B.Com student at a local college, was arrested on July 12 after the Anjuman Committee filed a complaint against her at Pithora Police Station for sharing an objectionable post on Facebook, which reportedly hurt religious sentiments.

India: Screening for City Congress Committee formation completes

KANPUR: In spite of lowering the popularity graph of the grand old Congress party, the workers  are still not disheartened.

The party's senior leader visited New Delhi but he failed to meet apex level leaders. Some other ex-office-bearers of the City Congress Committee are also making up their minds to take a round of the capital.

They know that first the AICC and then the PCC would be reconstituted. But they do not want to lose opportunity of visiting at the party's head office.
