India: Body of minor girl found in bushes in UP; FIR registered

Jalaun (UP), Jun 9 (PTI) Body of a 7-year-old girl was found in the bushes outside Bijbaha village in Uttar Pradesh Sunday, police said.

The incident comes close on the heels of the brutal murder of a toddler at Aligarh in the state.

Superintendent of Police Swami Prasad said the minor had gone missing on Saturday.

"The girl's body was spotted by the locals Sunday morning," he said.

A case has been registered against two persons following a complaint by the victim's father, Laakhan Singh, Prasad said.

India: Bus stopped by eatery, passengers asked to eat and pay

Patna, Jun 9 (PTI) Passengers of a bus coming here from West Bengal were allegedly beaten up in Burdwan district of the adjoining state where a mob attacked them for refusing to halt their journey to have meal at a roadside eatery, police said on Sunday.

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi targeted the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal over the incident and questioned the "silence" of opposition political leaders friendly to her like jailed RJD supremo Lalu Prasad.

India: 11 sentenced to life imprisonment in Jharkhand for rape

Dumka, Jun 10 (PTI) A local court Monday sentenced 11 persons to life imprisonment for raping a 19-year-old woman in Dumka district of Jharkhand in 2017.

District and Sessions Judge (II) Pawan Kumar, who had convicted them on June 7, also imposed varying fine totalling Rs 2.97 lakh on them, additional public prosecutor Surendra Prasad Sinha said.

Indian PM Modi to meet secretaries of all ministries today

New Delhi, Jun 10 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called a meeting of all secretaries on Monday, where he is likely to outline priorities of his government, sources said.

Besides about 100 top bureaucrats, a few key ministers are expected to attend the meeting which the sources said will be a freewheeling discussion.

The Principal Secretary to Prime Minister, the Additional Principal Secretary to PM and the Cabinet Secretary will be in attendance alongside the secretaries of all ministries.

6 convicted in gang rape, murder of 8-yr-old girl in Kathua; 1 acquitted

Pathankot (Punjab), Jun 10 (PTI) Six of the seven accused in the horrific gangrape-and-murder case of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua were convicted by a court here on Monday, lawyers said.

A seventh accused, namely Vishal -- son of main accused Sanji Ram -- was acquitted by the court, giving him the 'benefit of doubt', said Farooqi Khan, who represented the victim's family in the court.

The court pronounced its much-awaited verdict away from the gaze of media which has gathered outside the premises.

PM warns tax evaders to declare assets or face action: PAK

ISLAMABAD, Jun 10 (APP): Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday asked the tax evaders to declare their financial assets, within the country and abroad, before June 30 or be ready for an indiscriminate action.

The Prime Minister in a televised address to the nation said this government had an unprecedented in-depth information about the assets of the citizens including their bank accounts, real estate and benami (in the name of another person) transactions and thus would not spare anyone who does not declare them before June 30.

Indian ground team looking for climbers’ bodies in Himalayas

NEW DELHI (AP) — India’s mountaineering foundation has launched a ground expedition on a notoriously dangerous Himalayan mountain to retrieve the bodies of five people believed to be from a missing team of international climbers, an official said Monday.

The foundation spokesman Amit Chaudhary said a fully equipped 12-member team hopes to reach the area where the bodies were spotted by Saturday. Helicopter missions have failed to reach the area at an altitude of 5,000 meters (16,404 feet) due to strong turbulence.

Modi woos Sri Lanka, Maldives as India tries to fend off Chinese influence

9 June 2019; DW: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was received Sunday by his Sri Lankan counterpart, Ranil Wickremesinghe, as he arrived in Colombo after completing his Maldives trip.

Modi's Maldives and Sri Lanka visits are his first since he was re-elected as prime minister in May.

The Indian prime minister was scheduled to hold talks with President Maithripala Sirisena and opposition leaders as well.
