Lebanon: Children leaving school to work for $7 a week

05 Sep 2022; MEMO: In Lebanon, kids are leaving school for a salary of $7 a week, Haaretz reports.

According to the report, the country is losing a generation of school children, school teachers, university students and lecturers.

With the depreciation of the pound in Lebanon, teachers' salaries have also fallen to roughly $100 a month, which is not enough to pay for the rising cost of fuel, the report says.

Iraq groups hold 2nd round of dialogue to resolve political crisis

05 Sep 2022; MEMO: Iraq's rival political groups held a second round of national dialogue on Monday in an effort to resolve the country's months-long political crisis Anadolu News Agency reports.

The office of Prime Minister, Mustafa Al-Kadhimi, reported the news, without providing any further details.

The first round of the dialogue was held on 17 August, but was boycotted by influential Shia cleric, Moqtada Al-Sadr.

It was not yet clear whether Monday's session was attended by the firebrand leader.

Turkiye supports Libya's Tripoli forces

06 Sep 2022; MEMO: Turkiye announced that the country supports Libya's Tripoli forces, amid deadly battles after the clashes on Friday took place in Warshafala, a district west of Tripoli, local Turkish media reports.

According to the report, on 1 September, Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, Defence Minister, Hulusi Akar and spy chief, Hakan Fidan met with two rival Libyan premiers, Fathi Bashagha and Abdul Hamid Dbeibah.

Israel threatens to close school in Ramallah

06 Sep 2022; MEMO: Israeli occupation authorities yesterday threatened to close a Palestinian school in the village of Deir Nizam, northwest of Ramallah, alleging students throw stones at Israeli occupation soldiers.

Badr Shreitah, the school headmaster, said Israeli occupation forces surrounded Deir Nizam secondary school and threatened to shut it down for one month if stone-throwing by students continues.

Turkish military helicopter crashes in northern Iraq

05 Sep 2022; MEMO: A Turkish military helicopter crashed in northern Iraq, the National Defence Ministry said early on Monday, Anadolu News Agency reports.

Seven of the eight personnel on board were rescued, while a search operation is under way for the remaining individual, the Ministry said in a statement.

The Sikorsky helicopter was on a supply mission and had to make a hard landing in the Operation Claw-Lock region due to "technical reasons", the statement added.

Tunisia faces imminent 'collapse' and 'chaos', warn parties

06 Sep 2022; MEMO: Political parties in Tunisia warned on Monday that the country is facing imminent "collapse" and "chaos". In a joint statement, they said that the government of President Kais Saied "is unable and unqualified to face challenges."

The Democratic Current, the Democratic Alliance for Labour and Freedoms, the Labour Party, the Republican Party and the Qutub Party added that, "In light of many indicators, it has become certain that the country is heading to a massive crisis that will threaten civil safety."

Iran is ready to supply oil to Europe if sanctions lifted

06 Sep 2022; MEMO: Iran is ready to supply oil to Europe should sanctions imposed on it over its nuclear programme be lifted, spokesman of Iran's Foreign Ministry Nasser Kanani said yesterday.

AFP reported Kanani saying: "Given Europe's energy supply problems triggered by the Ukraine crisis, Iran could provide Europe's energy needs if sanctions against it are lifted."

Israel probes corruption, sexual harassment scandals in Morocco consulate

06 Sep 2022; MEMO: Israel's Foreign Ministry has started an investigation into corruption, sexual harassment and financial improprieties in the consulate in Morocco, local media reported yesterday.

The scandals included charges that a senior Israeli official sexually exploited several local women.
