50 world leaders call for post-pandemic cooperation

UNITED NATIONS, May 29 (NNN-AGENCIES) — World leaders called for resilience and cooperation after the pandemic recedes, during a UN video conference in which the United States, China and Russia did not participate.

About 50 leaders took part in the event on development financing, with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte saying in a recorded message that the goal must be to “leave no one behind.”

Pompeo says Pres Trump to act on Chinese students, possibly annuling visas

WASHINGTON, May 29 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The United States will take action to prevent alleged espionage by Chinese students, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said, ahead of an expected announcement by President Donald Trump.

Trump earlier said that he will hold a press conference Friday about China amid soaring tensions between the two powers, including over the status of Hong Kong and the novel coronavirus pandemic.

UN Security Council to informally discuss Hong Kong on Friday

UNITED NATIONS, May 29 (NNN-AGENCIES) — The United States and Britain have called for the UN Security Council to meet Friday to discuss a controversial security law that China plans to impose on Hong Kong, diplomatic sources said.

The subject will be considered in an informal, closed-door videoconference in a format that allows any member to raise various issues and which China cannot in principle oppose, according to the same sources.

On Wednesday, Beijing had refused to allow a formal Security Council meeting called by Washington on the same subject to proceed.

Europe moves ahead with lockdown easing, but caution in Asia

PARIS, May 29 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Several European countries including France and Britain on Thursday moved to further lift crippling coronavirus lockdown measures, but fresh restrictions in parts of Asia signalled the crisis is far from over.

As much of the world grapples to find the path forward, with the deadly virus still spreading in some places and a vaccine at best a distant reality, Europe is slowly emerging from isolation.

South African Airways cannot afford to pay salaries

PRETORIA, May 29 (NNN-AGENCIES) — South African Airways (SAA) has said it does not have money to pay its employees their May salaries.

About 5,000 employees have been on unpaid leave since the beginning of May.

The only money employees can expect to receive this month is from the unemployment insurance fund, the aviation organiser at the Solidarity trade union, Derek Mans, said.

The team rescuing the struggling airline originally wanted to dismiss the 5,000 staff.

That was stopped by the labour court but they have now been allowed to appeal that ruling.

UN calls on nations to take action in six areas to limit COVID-19’s financial impact
