Algeria accuses Israel and Morocco of launching cyberattack on official news agency

13 Feb 2023; MEMO: Algeria accused Morocco and Israel yesterday of launching a cyberattack on the website of the official Algerian News Agency. According to Algerian state television, the website was subjected to a series of serious cyberattacks for hours as hackers tried to get into the site.

Algeria witnesses rare snowfall

25 Jan 2023; MEMO: Algeria witnessed rare snowfall on Tuesday in a number of desert areas in the south-west of the country. Images published by the Bechar province authorities on Facebook showed "Beni Ounif in white" as sand dunes acquired a blanket of snow.

This was the first heavy snowfall in the area since 2012. Happy local residents have been sharing their own photos and video clips on social media.

Algeria: 17 people die of carbon monoxide poisoning

11 Jan 2023; MEMO: Seventeen people have died of carbon monoxide poisoning in Algeria over the past 24 hours, the Algerian Civil Defence said yesterday.

Nine people from one family were found dead on Monday evening in their home in Bou Saada, about 250 kilometres south of Algiers, the Civil Defence said.

The family consisted of the father, mother, five children, and two guests.

'Severing relations with Rabat an alternative to war': Algeria president

31 Dec 2022; MEMO: Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has asserted that mediation between his country and Morocco was not possible and that severing relations with Rabat was the alternative to war.

In an interview with the French Le Figaro newspaper, Tebboune added that Algeria's severing of its relations with Morocco resulted from accumulations since 1963.

Algeria: Foreign reserves down to $60bn by end of 2022

27 Dec 2022; MEMO: Algeria's foreign reserves amounted to $60 billion by the end of 2022, the governor of the Bank of Algeria announced yesterday, Anadolu Agency reported.

Salah-Eddine Taleb told reporters that the available reserves would cover the country's import needs from goods and services for two and a half years.

Algeria recovers $20bn in looted funds, President says

23 Dec 2022; MEMO: Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has revealed that $20 billion of the money looted in corruption cases has been recovered by the state.

"We have recovered about $20 billion and there are mechanisms to recover the [looted] money stored here and there," he explained.

Regarding international affairs, Tebboune denied any mediation by any party between Algeria and Morocco. "If there is a mediation, the people have the right to know it," he said.
