UN Yemen envoy urges immediate end to Houthi offensive

18 Feb 2021; MEMO: An increasingly intense assault by Yemen's Houthi rebels on the government-held city of Marib "must stop" amid spiraling humanitarian fallout, the UN's envoy for the country warned Thursday, Anadolu Agency reported.

Martin Griffiths told the Security Council that the assault risks putting millions of civilians at risk, particularly as it threatens to reach camps for individuals who have already been displaced during the seven-year conflict.

U.S. defense secretary calls Saudi crown prince, reaffirms strategic ties

DUBAI (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, state media said on Friday, days after the White House said it would deal with the king, not his heir, and U.S. officials would engage their counterparties in the kingdom.

Crown Prince Mohammed, who is also Saudi Defence Minister, reviewed bilateral relations with Austin, especially in defence cooperation, state news agency SPA said.

Turkey hires U.S. lobbying firm to return to F-35 jet programme

ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkey has hired a Washington-based law firm to lobby for its readmission to the U.S. F-35 fighter jet programme after it was suspended over its purchase of Russian air defences, a contract filed with the U.S. Department of Justice showed.

Ankara had ordered more than 100 stealth fighters and has been making parts for their production, but was removed from the programme in 2019 after it bought the Russian S-400 missile defence systems, which Washington says threaten the F-35s.

Iran will reverse nuclear actions when U.S. lifts sanctions - Zarif

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran will “immediately reverse” actions in its nuclear programme when U.S. sanctions are lifted, its foreign minister said on Friday, reiterating Tehran’s position on Washington’s offer to revive talks.

The Joe Biden administration said on Thursday it was ready to revive a 2015 agreement between Iran and world powers that former president Donald Trump abandoned in 2018 before reimposing sanctions on Iran.

When sanctions are lifted, “we will then immediately reverse all remedial measures. Simple,” Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Twitter.

Turkey To Gradually Lift COVID-19 Restrictions From March

ANKARA, Feb 18 (NNN-ANADOLU) – Turkey will gradually lift restrictions against COVID-19 on the provincial levels from March, Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said yesterday.

“We will start the normalisation process at the beginning of March by dividing our provinces into four groups,” Erdogan said.

The government will lift the restrictions gradually, according to the number of cases, vaccination and other relevant criteria in the provinces, he added.

Israel's elections body refuses to disqualify Joint List

18 Feb 2021; MEMO: Israel's Central Elections Committee yesterday refused to disqualify Joint List bloc, an alliance of predominantly Arab parties, ahead of the Knesset elections due next month, local media reported.

Prior to looking into petitions against the Joint List, the Elections Committee disqualified Arab candidate in the Labor party Ibtisam Mara'ana following a petition filed against her by the Otzma Yehudit party.
