Iran executes dissident journalist Ruhollah Zam for 2017 anti-gov protests

12 Dec 2020; MEMO:  Iranian dissident journalist Ruhollah Zam, who was convicted of fomenting violence during the 2017 anti-government protests, was executed on Saturday, Iran's state television reported.

Iran's Supreme Court on Tuesday upheld the death sentence of Zam, who was captured in 2019 after years in exile. His Amadnews feed had more than one million followers.

Russia: Erdogan says Putin supports Baku’s idea to set up regional security platform

ANKARA, December 11. /TASS/: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has stated that his Russian colleague Vladimir Putin expressed support for the idea of Baku to establish a regional security platform that may involve Russia, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iran, Georgia and Armenia. The Turkish president made this statement to reporters onboard his plane as he was returning from Azerbaijan.

Morocco, Israel normalisation is 'betrayal' of Palestine - Iranian official

DUBAI (Reuters) - Morocco’s normalisation of relations with Israel is a betrayal and a stab in the back of Palestine, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, an adviser to Iran’s parliamentary speaker, said on Friday.

Israel and Morocco agreed on Thursday to normalise relations in a deal brokered with U.S. help, making Morocco the fourth Arab country to set aside hostilities with Israel in the past four months.

Erdogan says U.S. sanctions would 'disrespect' Turkey

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - President Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday U.S. sanctions over Turkey’s purchase of Russian S-400 missiles would be disrespectful of a NATO ally, after sources said Washington was poised to take the step likely to worsen bilateral relations.

Turkey’s lira tumbled nearly 2% after Reuters, citing sources, reported U.S. sanctions are set to be announced as soon as Friday and target Turkey’s Defence Industries Directorate.

Armenia needs new leaders: Erdogan

11 Dec 2020; MEMO:  Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday renewed a call for a change of leadership in Armenia, while offering the country the chance of joining a regional cooperation group alongside Azerbaijan, Reuters reports.

Erdogan made the comments in Baku, where he reviewed a military parade marking Armenia's defeat by Azerbaijan in a war in the disputed enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Iraq amends law giving Palestinian residents same rights as nationals

11 Dec 2020; MEMO:  The Iraqi parliament has approved a legal amendment to the law on foreigners giving Palestinians who have resided in Iraq for a minimum of ten years the same rights as Iraqi nationals, Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.

Under the new amendments, the news agency disclosed that Palestinians who have lived in Iraq for at least ten years would enjoy the same rights as Iraqis, with the exception of citizenship, running for public office and voting.

Kuwait allows return of expat healthcare workers

11 Dec 2020; MEMO:  The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a decision allowing all workers of the Ministry of Health and their first-degree relatives, holding valid residency permits and entry visas, to return to the country on direct or transit flights, Kuwaiti Al-Rai newspaper reported.
