Rouhani: US sanctions, coronavirus make for Iran's toughest year

28 June 2020; MEMO: Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Sunday that his country is experiencing its toughest year because of U.S. sanctions coupled with the COVID-19 pandemic, Reuters reports.

The coronavirus crisis has exacerbated economic problems that worsened after U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew in 2018 from Iran’s nuclear deal with major powers and reimposed sanctions. On Monday, Iran’s rial currency fell to its lowest ever level against the U.S. dollar.

Egypt court jails belly dancer for ‘debauchery’ in social media crackdown

28 June 2020; MEMO: A high-profile Egyptian belly-dancer, Sama el-Masry, was sentenced to three years in prison and fined 300,000 Egyptian pounds ($18,500) on Saturday for inciting debauchery and immorality as part of a crackdown on social media postings, Reuters reports.

El-Masry was arrested in April during an investigation into videos and photos on social media, including the popular video-sharing platform TikTok, that the public prosecution described as sexually suggestive.

Libya calls for sanctions on foreign mercenaries

28 June 2020; MEMO: Libya’s permanent representative to the UN, Taher El-Sonni, on Saturday called for imposing sanctions on Russian and Sudanese mercenaries in the country.

On Friday, mercenaries from Wagner Group and the Sudanese Janjaweed militia forced their way into El-Sharara oilfield to halt oil experts from the field, according to Libya’s National Oil Corporation (NOC).

Hundreds of Israelis protest in Jerusalem against Netanyahu

Jerusalem, Jun 28 (AP/PTI) Hundreds of Israelis protested on Saturday evening against Benjamin Netanyahu outside his Jerusalem residence as the Israeli prime minister faces corruption charges.

The demonstration was fuelled by the detention of seven protesters on Friday who held a smaller rally against Netanyahu's continuation as premier despite being under indictment.

The demonstrators held banners describing Netanyahu as "crime minister".

Unknown Warplanes Strike Military Positions In Eastern Syria

DAMASCUS, June 28 (NNN-SANA) – Unknown warplanes struck positions of the Syrian army and Iranian forces, in the eastern province of Deir al-Zour on Saturday, a war monitor reported.

The warplanes struck positions before sunset in the al-Abbas village, in the countryside of the city of Al-Bukamal, in the eastern countryside of Deir al-Zour, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Britain-based watchdog group said, no reports have emerged yet about losses.

It is the latest in a string of airstrikes targeting military positions in Deir al-Zour.

Israel’s Youngest COVID-19 Victim Dies At Age 19

JERUSALEM, June 28 (NNN-MA’AN) – A 19-year-old woman died of COVID-19 on Saturday, becoming the youngest victim of the virus in Israel.

The patient suffered from many other severe diseases, including pulmonary hypertension and heart failure, with extreme overweight, causing movement difficulty, said Hadassah Medical Centre in Jerusalem.

The patient was infected with a massive viral load, and when admitted to the hospital, she immediately needed ventilation.

Three Iranian boats forced out of Saudi waters: Saudi border guards

RIYADH, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Saudi Arabia's border guards announced on Saturday that three Iranian boats were forced to retreat from Saudi waters.

The coast guards patrols spotted the boats on Thursday, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

The boats were followed and warned to go back but failed to respond, then warning shots were fired and the vessels were forced to leave, said the report. 

Libya says foreign mercenaries shut down oil supplies in oilfields, ports

TRIPOLI, June 27 (Xinhua) -- The Foreign Ministry of Libya's UN-backed government on Saturday said that there are "mercenaries" allied with the rival eastern-based army shutting down oil exports inside oilfields and ports.

"The Foreign Ministry followed up reports and information confirming presence of foreign mercenaries of the Russian Wagner, Janjaweed, and other mercenaries inside Libyan oilfields and ports, and lately Sharara oilfield," the ministry said in a statement.
