Iranian parliament's commission approves plan to suspend implementation of Additional Protocol

TEHRAN, June 23 (Xinhua) -- The National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of Iran's Parliament on Tuesday approved a plan to stop Iran's "voluntary" implementation of the Additional Protocol to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), semi-official Fars news agency reported.

Libyan UN-backed gov't reduces representation at Arab League meeting

TRIPOLI, June 23 (Xinhua) -- The UN-backed government of Libya reduced its representation at the Arab League (AL) meeting on Tuesday, criticizing AL's "double standards in effect."

"Libya reduces the level of its representation in the AL meeting and criticizes the double standards in force. Until this moment, the session that Libya had been demanding since April of last year has not been held, despite obtaining quorum," the Foreign Ministry of the UN-backed government said.

U.S. Caesar Act aim to affect Syrian presidential elections: FM

DAMASCUS, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem said Tuesday that the U.S. new sanctions against Syria aim to affect the next presidential elections in Syria.

At a press conference, al-Moallem said that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will remain in power as long as the Syrian people want that.

He stressed that the new tightened U.S. sanctions on Syria aim to affect and overshadow the presidential elections that will take place in 2021.

Israeli annexation plan draws apartheid comparisons

JERUSALEM (AP) — Benjamin Pogrund spent decades battling apartheid as a journalist in South Africa. Since moving to Israel two decades ago, he has passionately defended the country against charges that it too is an apartheid state.

But at the age of 87, Pogrund is having second thoughts. He says that if Israel moves ahead with plans to annex parts of the West Bank, he will have no choice but to declare that his adopted homeland has become a modern-day version of apartheid-era South Africa.

Turkey: Man jailed for breaking cross at Armenian church

23 June 2020; MEMO: A man who broke the cross off an Armenian church in Turkey’s commercial capital Istanbul has been jailed for five years and four months.

The Istanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor’s office on Friday sentenced Mazlum Serin to a jail term after he climbed the Surp Krikor Lusavoric Armenian Church’s fence and removed the cross from the property and threw it on to the pavement on 23 May.

Iran: Ties with UAE improving, ready for dialogue with Saudi Arabia

23 June 2020; MEMO: Iran said its relationship with the UAE has improved and it is ready for dialogue with Saudi Arabia, Al Jazeera reported a top Iranian military official saying yesterday.

The news channel reported Yahya Safavi, the adviser to the Iranian Supreme Leader for military affairs, saying: “Our relationship with the UAE has improved and Abu Dhabi’s attitudes towards us have changed.”

Hezbollah threatens Israel with precision guided missiles

23 June 2020; MEMO: The Lebanese Hezbollah movement released a new video on Saturday through which the group threatens to bomb Israel with precision-guided missiles.

The video appears to show the coordinates of sensitive military sites in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories.

Also on display were audio clips of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah who can be heard claiming that the movement has the capacity to hit “very precise targets” anywhere in Israel. Hebrew subtitles were added to the video.

Libyan government ‘proves’ Haftar's financial corruption

23 June 2020; MEMO: Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA) revealed two documents on Monday which allegedly prove Khalifa Haftar’s involvement in financial corruption. An official GNA media centre posted a copy of the documents on Twitter.

The documents show that one of the economic arms of Haftar’s militia, “the Military Investment Authority, took over public land plots and properties [and confiscated] fixed and movable assets of agricultural projects and other investment sites illegally.”
