Guards say Iran successfully launches first military satellite

22 April 2020; AFP: Iran's Revolutionary Guards announced they had successfully launched the country's first military satellite on Wednesday, a programme that the US alleges is a cover for its missile development.

"The first satellite of the Islamic Republic of Iran has been successfully launched into orbit by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps," said the Guards' Sepahnews website.

Israeli survivors remember Holocaust amid virus quarantine

JERUSALEM (AP) — With the global coronavirus pandemic ravaging the elderly, Israel’s aging population of Holocaust survivors finds itself on the country’s annual Holocaust Remembrance Day this year much like they were during World War II — alone and in fear of the unknown.

Some survivors say the current isolation and sense of danger has triggered difficult memories linked with their wartime experiences. Others bristle at any comparison to their plight during World War II – when the Nazis systematically murdered 6 million Jews.

Russian, Turkish servicemen conduct fifth joint patrol mission along M4 highway in Syria

SARAQIB /Syria/. April 21. /TASS/: Russian and Turkish servicemen conducted the fifth joint patrol mission along the M4 highway linking the cities of Aleppo and Latakia in Syria’s Idlib governorate, the Russian Center for Reconciliation of the Opposing Parties in Syria said on Tuesday.

The mission was conducted under the agreements between the Russian and Turkish presidents of March 5.

Egypt begins clinical trials of coronavirus drug

21 April 2020; MEMO: The Egyptian Presidential Advisor for Health and Prevention Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Awad Taj El-Din, said his country had started clinical trials for Avigan antiviral drug to treat coronavirus patients.

Avigan is an antiviral drug produced by Japan’s Fujifilm Holdings Corporation in 2014 to treat influenza and new viruses.

Iran urges Europe to stand against U.S. pressures amid COVID-19 pandemic

TEHRAN, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Tuesday urged the European countries to oppose U.S. economic pressures on Iran amid COVID-19 pandemic, state TV reported.

The U.S. economic pressures on the Iranian people are more "inhumane" when the entire world is gripped with the novel coronavirus issue, Rouhani said in a telephone conversation with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.

Turkey inaugurates new mega-hospital for COVID-19 patients in Istanbul

ISTANBUL, April 20 (Xinhua) -- The first phase of a new mega-hospital, which will be used for treating COVID-19 patients, was inaugurated on Monday in Turkey's biggest city Istanbul.

The inpatient services of the gynecology and pediatric clinics of the Basaksehir City Hospital were put into service, which are used as pandemic hospitals for the time being.

Turkish Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said, "Thus, today, we have added 1,035 qualified beds, including 155 intensive care beds, to our health system," he noted.

Malaysian PM thanks country’s frontliners over world recognition in fight against COVID-19

Singapore corona cases top 9,000 after 1,111 new cases reported

SINGAPORE, April 21 (NNN-CNA) — Singapore reported 1,111 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, taking the national total to 9,125.  

The vast majority of the new cases are work permit holders residing in foreign worker dormitories, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said in its release of preliminary figures. 

Twenty cases are Singaporeans or permanent residents.

“We are still working through the details of the cases, and further updates will be shared via the MOH press release that will be issued tonight,” the ministry added.
