Sudan bans maize exports over fear of coronavirus food shortage

03 April 2020; MEMO: The Sudanese Ministry of Industry and Trade has temporarily banned exports of maize from 15 April until further notice as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Undersecretary of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Muhammad Ali Abdullah said in a statement yesterday that the decision was taken after identifying a gap in the maize reserves with the aim of building a stockpile in line with the declaration of a health emergency in the country due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Saudi Arabia calls for urgent OPEC+ meeting to stabilise oil markets

03 April 2020; MEMO: Saudi Arabia yesterday called for an urgent meeting of the OPEC+ oil producers with the “aim of seeking a fair agreement that will restore the desired balance to the oil markets”, state-run Saudi Press Agency reported.

The agency said the Saudi invitation came after a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman.

Saudi Arabia imposes 24-hour curfew in holy cities

RIYADH, April 3 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Saudi Arabia extended curfew restrictions on Islam’s two holiest cities to 24 hours to stem the spread of Coronavirus as the number of deaths from the disease rose to 21.

The announcement comes amid uncertainty over the hajj which is due to take place at the end of July, after authorities this week urged Muslims to temporarily defer preparations for the annual pilgrimage.

Libya: UN-backed GNA forces kill 20 Haftar militia members

TRIPOLI, April 3 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Libya’s UN-recognized Government of National Accord (GNA) said Friday that its forces killed 20 militia members loyal to renegade Gen. Khalifa Haftar in Sirte.

The militia members were killed in an airstrike, Mustafa al-Mujie, the spokesman for the GNA-led Burkan Al-Ghadab (Volcano of Rage) Operation, told Anadolu Agency.

Iran’s official death toll due to corona passes 3,000

TEHRAN, April 3 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Iran’s official death toll from the coronavirus disease has passed 3,000.

Health ministry spokesman Kianush Jahanpour reported 138 fatalities in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 3,036. The number of confirmed cases also rose by 2,987 to 47,593, he added.

There are concerns that the actual figures are much higher.

Jahanpour also said Iranians had mostly heeded a request not to leave their homes for a traditional picnic on the last day of the Nowruz holiday.

Iraq has confirmed thousands more COVID-19 cases than reported, medics say

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraq has thousands of confirmed COVID-19 cases, many times more than the 772 it is has publicly reported, according to three doctors closely involved in the testing process, a health ministry official and a senior political official.

The sources all spoke on condition of anonymity. Iraqi authorities have instructed medical staff not to speak to the media.

Iraq’s health ministry, the only official outlet for information on the coronavirus, dismissed the sources’ reading of the spread of the disease.
