Revolutionary Guards commander denies Iranian targets hit in Syria air strikes

25 Aug 2019; MEMO: A senior Revolutionary Guards commander denied on Sunday that Iranian targets had been hit in Israeli air strikes in Syria, the semi-official ILNA news agency reported, according to Reuters.

Israeli aircraft on Saturday struck Iranian forces near Damascus that had been planning to launch “killer drones” at targets in Israel, an Israeli military spokesman said.

2 Israeli drones crash in Lebanon

25 Aug 2019; MEMO: An Israeli drone went down and another exploded in southern Lebanon early Sunday, an official with Lebanese group Hezbollah said, Anadolu Agency reported.

One drone crashed over the Moawwad neighbourhood in southern Lebanon after midnight and its debris were taken to a safe place by Hezbollah members, Lebanese channel LBC1 said, citing the official, who was unnamed.

Another drone exploded in the same area, the official said.

Turkey-US conduct first reconnaissance flight in northeast Syria

25 Aug 2019; MEMO: US and Turkish leaders conducted the first US-Turkey reconnaissance flight, the Pentagon said Saturday, Anadolu Agency reports.

Spokesman Sean Robertson told Anadolu Agency that two generals, one from each country, flew on the same helicopter on Saturday.

This “milestone” followed establishment of the joint coordination center earlier this week, Robertson said in an emailed statement.

Indian PM Modi launches USD 4.2 mn Hindu temple redevelopment project in Bahrain

Manama, Aug 25 (PTI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched the USD 4.2 million redevelopment project of the 200-year-old Lord Sri Krishna temple in the Bahraini capital.

Modi, the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the key Gulf nation, offered prayers at the Shreenathji Temple in Manama, the oldest temple in the region, and also the prasad' that he bought with the RuPay card after launching it in the UAE on Saturday.

Prime Minister then unveiled the plaque, thus officially launching the redevelopment project of the iconic temple.

AU urges closer public-private partnership to realize continental development ambitions

ADDIS ABABA, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- The African Union (AU) on Saturday stressed the vital importance of enhancing the partnership between African policymakers and the private sector towards the realization of the continent's 50-year development Agenda 2063.

The 55member pan African bloc, calling on African policymakers and the private sector, also disclosed its plan to host the African Private Sector Forum in November this year with an aim to further bolster cooperation among towards the success of the ambitious Agenda 2063.

Israel says it thwarts imminent Iranian attack from Syria

JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military attacked targets near Damascus late Saturday in what it said was a successful effort to thwart an imminent Iranian drone strike on Israel, stepping up an already heightened campaign against Iranian military activity in the region.

The late-night airstrike, which triggered Syrian anti-aircraft fire, appeared to be one of the most intense attacks by Israeli forces in several years of hits on Iranian targets in Syria.

Libya: 17 Haftar fighters surrender to Tripoli government

24 Aug 2019; MEMO: The internationally-backed Libyan government yesterday announced that 17 fighters affiliated with General Khalifa Haftar handed themselves over in the south of the capital Tripoli, Anadolu Agency reported.

The government said in a statement that the fighters handed themselves over, along with their weapons, without giving more details.

Egypt loses 53,000 acres of farm land in 8 years

24 Aug 2019; MEMO: Egypt’s Agricultural Ministry has said that the country lost 53,000 acres of farm land between January 2011 and August 2019, Alraimedia.com reported yesterday.

Citing a report by the Central Administration for Land Protection, the ministry said that it registered 1.9 million violations against fertile land.

Though the ministry regained control of some of this land, some 53,592 acres of fertile land remain out of the ministry’s control.

Israel settlers attack Palestinian cars with stones

24 Aug 2019; MEMO: Several groups of illegal Israeli settlers yesterday hurled stones at Palestinian vehicles near the West Bank cities of Hebron and Nablus, Quds Press reported.

Quds Press said that settlers gathered at Route 60, east of Hebron, and threw stones at Palestinian cars. Israeli forces also set up a checkpoint in the city’s Dora neighbourhood and caused heavy congestion as they searched the cars and checked drivers’ IDs.
