US to halt funding for Israel projects in occupied Palestinian, Syria territories

26 June 2023; MEMO: The United States informed Israel yesterday it will halt all funding towards scientific and technological research cooperation projects taking place in the occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem and Syrian Golan Heights.

The decision reverses a policy imposed by the Trump administration in 2020 that enabled US taxpayer funding to be used for science and technology projects in the settlements for the first time since 1967.

26 June 2023; MEMO: Palestinian pilgrim, Abu Anas Abu Rahal, was hoping to find cheaper lodgings for a week-long stay in Islam's holiest sites in Saudi Arabia, as the minimum cost for the Hajj pilgrimage climbed to 26,000 riyals ($7,000) this year. His options were limited, Reuters reports.

The 65-year-old struggled to pay the bill, despite choosing the cheapest-offered package, which included travelling to Saudi Arabia by land and sharing hotel rooms with other pilgrims.

UK returns smuggled Sassanid-era artefact to Iran

26 June 2023; MEMO: Iran's chargé d'affaires to the UK has announced that London has returned a third-century rock relief sculpture to the Islamic Republic, which had been smuggled out of the country in 2016.

In a tweet on Friday, Mehdi Hosseini Matin said that the Iranian embassy had received the ancient artefact, which dates back to the Sassanid Empire (224-641 CE), after it had been on display at the British Museum for three months.

US to test its Palestine dual-nationals' Israel access in July

27 June 2023; MEMO: The United States will test Palestinian-Americans' freedom of travel in Israel next month as part of preparations for proposed US visa exemptions for Israelis, an official briefed on the preparations said on Monday, Reuters reports.

Israel has satisfied some conditions for the US Visa Waver Program (VWP), to which it hopes to be admitted by October.

Israel approves thousands of illegal building permits in West Bank

26 June 2023; MEMO: Israel's nationalist-religious government approved the construction of 5,700 additional illegal housing units for Jewish settlers in the Occupied West Bank on Monday, despite US pressure to halt settlement expansion that Washington sees as an obstacle to peace with Palestinians, Reuters reports.

The plans for approval of the housing units in various areas of the West Bank were approved by Israel's Supreme Planning Council. Jewish settler leadership praised the decision.

Israel reservist doctors threaten to refuse duty if judicial overhaul goes ahead

26 June 2023; MEMO: Around 300 Israeli military doctors in reserve units told the Defence Minister on Monday they will refuse to serve if the government pursues disputed legislation that would see the highest court stripped of most of its powers, Reuters reports.

Palestinian MPs file complaint against Israel at ICC

27 June 2023; MEMO: Palestinian MPs from the besieged Gaza have filed a complaint to the International Criminal Court (ICC) against the 17-year-long Israeli siege of the enclave, Quds Press reported yesterday.

First Deputy Speaker of the Palestinian Parliament, Ahmad Bahar, said in a press conference that the complaints came in the framework of legal, diplomatic and parliamentary efforts being exerted against the Israeli occupation's crimes.
