CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — The policy differences between the two major political parties vying for power at Australian elections on Saturday have been described as the widest divide at a federal contest in 26 years.

The center-left opposition Labor Party is regarded as pursuing a “big target strategy” with a diverse range of policies aimed at creating a more equitable society under the slogan “A Fair Go for Australia.” To give someone “a fair go” is an Australian colloquialism for providing justice.

Turkey deepens ties with Iraq amid regional instabilities

ANKARA, May 16 (Xinhua): Turkey and Iraq have deepened their relations and fostered trade, economic and political cooperation during Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi's visit to Ankara amid regional instabilities, said experts.

The visiting prime minister met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Wednesday, discussing issues such as Turkey's concerns on the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) activities in northern Iraq and the new border crossing to be established between the two countries.

India: HC asks Delhi govt for more fast track, commercial courts

New Delhi, May 16 (PTI) Taking note of the pendency of sexual assault and business dispute cases, the Delhi High Court Thursday directed the Delhi government to place before the Cabinet the requirement for 18 more fast track and 22 commercial courts.

A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice A J Bhambhani said the high court had sanctioned certain posts of judges for establishing fast track and commercials courts but the matter has been pending before the government for over two years.

India: Computer Baba booked for MCC violation

Bhopal, May 16 (PTI) Bhopal police Thursday registered an FIR against self-styled godman Namdev Das Tyagi alias Computer Baba for allegedly violating the model code of conduct (MCC), an official said on Thursday.

The FIR was registered at the directions of the district election officer.

Computer Baba had organised a "hath yoga" camp in Bhopal to campaign for Digvijaya Singh, Congress candidate from Bhopal, who had also participated in the event.

India: Curfew clamped in J&K's Bhaderwah for second day

Jammu, May 17 (PTI) Curfew remained clamped in Bhaderwah valley of Doda district for the second day on Friday following violent protests by members of a community against killing of a person.

The Doda district administration refuted media reports that "cow vigilantism" was the reason behind the murder and said some people were trying to give communal colour to the incident.

The Army has been deployed in the town besides additional security personnel being posted in sensitive areas to maintain law and order.

Shah Rukh Khan, David Letterman come together for Netflix special

Mumbai, May 17 (PTI) Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and veteran talk show host David Letterman have collaborated for a Netflix stand-alone special.

As per the press release issued by the streaming service, the show will be all about in-depth conversations, for which Letterman is renowned, and in-the-field segments expressing his curiosity and humour.

The 53-year-old Indian star said he was honoured to share his story with Letterman.

Potential new treatment targets root cause of asthma

SYDNEY, May 17 (Xinhua): Asthma sufferers can breathe a little easier with a potential new treatment revealed on Friday, targeting the underlying cause of the disease rather than the symptoms.

A study by Australia's Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research has shown in preclinical trials that by inhibiting the enzyme Ezh2 they can "switch off" and reverse the uncontrolled inflammation associated with asthma.

6 civilians reported killed in Tripoli attack: UN

UNITED NATIONS, May 16 (Xinhua): At least six civilians were reported killed and five more injured in an apparent airstrike in populated areas of the Libyan capital of Tripoli, Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said on Thursday.

Citing humanitarian colleagues as a source, Dujarric said the casualties were victims of explosive weapons used in Qasr Bin Ghashir, Tripoli, during an airstrike on Tuesday.

Japan’s trade negotiator: US won’t impose quotas on autos

TOKYO (AP) — Japan’s trade negotiator said Friday Washington won’t be demanding any numerical restrictions on Japanese auto exports to the U.S.

Toshimitsu Motegi, the economy minister, told reporters he had confirmed this by speaking with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer.

The comments could not immediately be confirmed after office hours in the U.S. Earlier, media reports said this was a possibility.

India: NPF to review its alliance with BJP in Manipur

Imphal, May 17 (PTI) Contending that the BJP does not pay heed to its ideas and suggestions, the NPF, a partner in the saffron party-led alliance in the state, has convened a meeting of its leaders on Saturday to decide if it would continue to stay in the coalition or withdraw support.

Denying the allegation, the BJP said it has extended all possible cooperation to its partners to ensure smooth functioning of the government.

Thirty arrested following unauthorized protests in Russia’s Yekaterinburg

YEKATERINBURG, May 17. /TASS/: Yekaterinburg’s Verkh-Isetsky District Court has arrested another participant in the May 15 authorized protest that took place in the city center, where St. Catherine’s Cathedral is planned to be rebuilt, the court’s spokesperson told TASS on Friday.

"The court’s magistrate ruled to arrest another one of those detained on May 15 for five days under Article 20.21 of the Russian Administrative Violations Code (public drunkenness)," the spokesperson said.

Russian Pacific Fleet's ships attack 'enemy' submarine at drills in Sea of Okhotsk

MOSCOW, May 17. /TASS/: Small anti-submarine ships have located and attacked an 'enemy' submarine at the military drills in the Sea of Okhotsk, spokesman for the Russian Pacific Fleet Nikolay Voskresensky said on Friday.

"Small anti-submarine ships MPR-107 and MPK-82, with the support of two Il-38 anti-submarine aircraft, have located an 'enemy' submarine in the assigned area. A Russian Pacific Fleet's nuclear-powered submarine was designated as an 'enemy' submarine during the drills," Voskresensky said.
