Lavrov meets with German top diplomat in Helsinki

HELSINKI, May 17. /TASS/: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has met with his German counterpart Heiko Maas on the sidelines of a meeting of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers in the Finnish capital of Helsinki on Friday.

The meeting between the Russian and German top diplomats took place behind closed doors.

The German Foreign Ministry said earlier that the parties would discuss bilateral relations, the situation in the Middle East, the Ukrainian issue and Russia’s Council of Europe membership.

India: Naxals call for 'bandh' in Gadchiroli on Sunday

Nagpur, May 17 (PTI) Naxals have called for a 'bandh' in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra on May 19 to protest the killings of two fellow women in an encounter last month, police said.

Naxals had put up banners in some villages in Etapalli tehsil of Gadchiroli on Wednesday night, in which they gave the 'bandh' call, an official from Gadchiroli superintendent of police (SP) office said Thursday.

Uzbekistan, China wrap up joint anti-terror drills

TASHKENT, May 16 (Xinhua): The Uzbek National Guard and the Chinese People's Armed Police Force concluded their two-week-long joint anti-terror exercise code-named "Cooperation-2019" at the Forish field training base in the Jizzakh region on Wednesday.

The high level and the quality of the joint exercise have strengthened the friendship and mutual trust between the National Guard of Uzbekistan and People's Armed Police Force of China, said Bakhodir Toshmatov, the commander of the Uzbek National Guard, at a ceremony marking the accomplishment of the joint drills.

Indian Polls: More women turn out in 3 of 7 LS seats in Delhi

New Delhi, May 16 (PTI) East Delhi, New Delhi and South Delhi parliamentary constituencies saw more women turning out to vote as compared to men, officials said Thursday.

Delhi recorded a turnout of 60.52 percent in the polls on May 12, five percentage points down from 2014.

According to official data, 60.82 per cent male voters and 60.15 per cent female voters exercised their right this time.

9 terrorists killed in shoot-out with police in SW Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, May 16 (Xinhua): At least nine terrorists were killed and four policemen injured in an operation by counter-terrorism department (CTD) of police in Pakistan's southwest Balochistan province on Thursday, local reports said.

The operation was carried out on an intelligence tip-off regarding presence of suspected militants in a compound being used as terrorists' camp in Mustang district of the province, ARY News reported.

India: Govt staff held for sexual assault on minor girl

Puducherry, May 16 (PTI) A 27-year-old man was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor girl at her house in a village near here Thursday, police said.

The man, a Puducherry government electricity department employee, was noting down the power consumption details at the nine-year-old girl's house when the incident occurred, they said.

She was alone as the parents had gone shopping.

Buildings in Nicaragua evacuated after 6.3 magnitude quake

MANAGUA, May 16 (Xinhua): Buildings in Nicaragua swayed and some were evacuated on Thursday after a powerful earthquake and aftershocks hit the region in the Pacific, according to official reports.

According to a government report, the focus of the quake, which occurred at 10:28 a.m. local time (1628 GMT), was located 56 km west of Jiquilillo in the western region of the country at a depth of 32 km.

Rosario Murillo, vice president of Nicaragua, said that the magnitude of the earthquake was 6.3 on the Richter scale.

Russia to announce anti-terrorist initiatives at G20 summit

DUSHANBE, May 17./TASS/: Russia will announce new anti-terrorist initiatives at the upcoming G20 summit, work on them is underway, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Oleg Syromolotov told TASS on Friday.

"They [initiatives] are being prepared at the moment, I am not yet ready to say exactly what kind of initiatives these will be, we still have a month-and-a-half before the G20 [summit]," the diplomat added.
