"Lucky Grandma," a love letter by Asian filmmakers to Chinatown

NEW YORK, May 9 (Xinhua): Led by two female Asian-American filmmakers, the movie "Lucky Grandma" has sent a special "love letter" to the U.S. Chinatown, featuring a Chinese immigrant elderly woman and her adventurous experience.

"Lucky Grandma," which premiered during the lately-closed 2019 Tribeca Film Festival, depicted how Grandma Wong got herself in a big trouble but sill insisted her independent life, and finally reaped an unexpected cross-age friendship.

Fireworks brighten Moscow’s skies to mark Victory Day

MOSCOW, May 9. /TASS/: A ten-minute fireworks show illuminated Moscow’s skies on Thursday night to mark the Soviet Union’s victory in the Great Patriotic War over Nazi Germany with more than 10,000 salvos.

Journalists were told earlier at the Western Military District’s press service that Artillery Marshal Vladimir Mikhalkin firework division would perform the fireworks show in Moscow on May 9.

The fireworks were launched from 72 saluting guns and 18 artillery guns, and 50 kinds of fireworks were used.

RIL to acquire British toy-maker Hamleys for Rs 620 cr

New Delhi, May 9 (PTI) Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Thursday announced it will acquire iconic British toy-maker Hamleys for 67.96 million pounds (around Rs 620 crore) in an all-cash deal.

Hamleys, a 259-year-old toy-maker, has struggled to generate profits in recent times. It reported a profit after tax of 2.44 million pounds in 2018 after suffering a loss of 11.24 million pounds in 2017.

SCO international medical forum to be held in S China

Delivering HIV vaccine piece by piece improves its killing power

WASHINGTON, May 9 (Xinhua): Scientists at a U.S. research institute have developed an HIV vaccine delivery strategy that enhanced the protective immune response in a preclinical model.

The study published on Thursday in the journal Cell showed that delivering HIV vaccine in small doses over multiple days produced stronger immune response than administering it all at once.

HIV is a crafty opponent with decoy sites on its outer protein shell to confuse the immune system and nullify the vaccines.

Bodies of 3 tourists died in avalanche in Altai have been identified

BARNAUL, May 10. /TASS/: Relatives identified the bodies of three tourists who died in an avalanche in the Altai Republic on Monday, a representative of the regional department of Russia’s Investigative Committee told TASS on Friday.

"The bodies of the three dead that were brought to Gorno-Altaisk, have been identified," the agency’s source said.

US Secretary of State to visit Moscow, Sochi on May 12-14

WASHINGTON, May 10. /TASS/: US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo will visit Moscow and Sochi on May 12-14, the Department of State said in a statement on Friday.

"On May 13, he will arrive in Russia to meet with his team at U.S. Embassy Moscow before meeting with UUS business leaders and UUS exchange alumni. Secretary Pompeo will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier," the statement reads.

Shipment of quality oil resumed in Ust-Luga port - Russia’s Energy Ministry

MOSCOW, May 10. /TASS/: Ust-Luga, a port in the Russian northwestern Leningrad region, has resumed shipping Russian export crude compliant with GOST (All Union State Standard) requirements, the Russian Energy Ministry said on Friday.

"Earlier, on May 8, on spec oil was transported to the metering station of Ust-Luga port. On May 9, it started to flow into a tank farm for being loaded onto tankers," the ministry added.

Veteran Russian adventurer ends his 154-day rowing solo in South Pacific

MOSCOW, May 10. /TASS/: Russian voyager and survivalist Fedor Konyukhov has finished his solo rowboat voyage on board Akros, crossing the South Pacific from New Zealand to Chile for 154 days 13 hours and 13 minutes, the Ocean Rowing Society said on Friday.

"On May 09, 2019 at approx. 18:00UTC Fedor crossed the finish line of Diego Ramirez Longitude (68.68W) within vicinity of land and with this has officially completed his row across the South Pacific Ocean from west to east," the statement says adding that it took the Russian traveler 154 days 13 hours and 37 minutes to do it.

Banned currency notes found in Nullah cleaning

Kanpur: It was astonishing that the confiscated currency notes in the denomination of one thousand and five hundred were found into the drains during its cleaning in Govind Nagar area here on Thursday. 

When the safari mazdoor deputed for cleaning the nullah saw wads of banned currency notes, they started removing silt fast. They kept the notes under their possession and informed the NN officers about the recovery of demonetised notes. 

U.S. move on Taiwan question puts China-U.S. ties in jeopardy

BEIJING, May 9 (Xinhua): Washington's recent move on the Taiwan question has muscled in on China's sovereignty and internal affairs, and put the bilateral relations in jeopardy.

The U.S. House of Representatives on Tuesday passed the "Taiwan Assurance Act of 2019" and "Reaffirming the United States commitment to Taiwan and to the implementation of the Taiwan Relations Act," a blunt violation of the one-China principle and the spirit of the three China-U.S. joint communiques.

Russian, French prime ministers discuss economic cooperation

MOSCOW, May 10. /TASS/: Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has held a telephone conversation with his French counterpart Edouard Philippe, the Russian cabinet’s press service said in a statement on Friday.

The parties "discussed pressing issues concerning Russian-French interaction, including trade, economic and investment cooperation," the statement reads. Medvedev and Philippe also talked about a schedule for future contacts between the two countries’ governments.

According to the press service, the telephone call was initiated by France.
