Former Pakistani Army soldier arrested along IB in Samba

Jammu, May 9 (PTI) The Border Security Force (BSF) Thursday arrested a former soldier of the Pakistan Army along the International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir's Samba district, officials said.

The alert troops of the BSF observed some movement along IB near a forward area and nabbed a person moving under suspicious circumstances, they said.

During preliminary investigation, he was identified as Mohmmad Afzal of Shakergarh district of Pakistan.

Southwest Japan rocked by series of earthquakes, no tsunami warnings issued

TOKYO, May 10 (Xinhua): Miyazaki Prefecture on the southeast coast of Kyushu Island in southwest Japan was rocked by a series of earthquakes Friday morning, the country's weather agency said, although no tsunami warnings or advisories have been issued.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), a magnitude 5.6 offshore quake jolted Miyazaki and neighboring prefectures at 7:43 a.m. local time (2243 GMT Thursday).

Asian civilization exhibition kicks off in Beijing

BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhua): The Asian Civilization Exhibition (Artworks), held by China's Ministry of Culture and Tourism, opened Friday at the National Art Museum of China, Beijing.

Titled "Shared Inspiration -- Asian Art Exhibition," the event will showcase 130 pieces of art created by 120 artists from 41 countries, including China, India, Japan and Pakistan.

India: Woman alleges man raped her and chopped off hair

Thane, May 9 (PTI) A 23-year-old woman working in the film industry has alleged that a man raped her on the pretext of marriage and forcibly chopped off her hair after they had a fight during a visit to Goa, a police official said.

Based on the woman's complaint, the Thane police in Maharashtra on Wednesday booked the man, identified as Amit Shelar, a resident of Wangani area here, he said.

Vice president of Venezuelan congress detained

9 May 2019; DW: Venezuelan intelligence agents on Wednesday detained Edgar Zambrano, the deputy leader of the opposition-dominated National Assembly, for supporting an attempted uprising on April 30.

Zambrano, opposition leader and self-declared President Juan Guaido's deputy as National Assembly speaker, was detained by agents in Caracas for backing the failed April 30 military uprising against President Nicolas Maduro, which was orchestrated by Guaido.

Venezuela's Supreme Court rejects U.S. vice president's threats against judges

CARACAS, May 8 (Xinhua): Venezuela's Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) on Wednesday "categorically and forcefully" rejected the threat made by U.S. Vice President Mike Pence to sanction the magistrates if they don't oppose President Nicolas Maduro.

In a statement read by TSJ President Maikel Moreno, the judicial body said that Pence "in a disrespectful and interfering manner seeks to subject the highest Venezuelan judicial authorities to threats that violate the principles of independence."

US envoy calls Germany 'hypocritical' on NATO

9 May 2019; DW: The United States ambassador to Germany on Thursday accused the German government of pursuing a hypocritical policy toward the NATO military alliance.

"It seems hypocritical to say that we should reform NATO while not aiming for the 2%," Richard Grenell told Bild newspaper, referring to an alliance goal of spending at least 2% of gross domestic product (GDP) on defense.
