India: GST collection at Rs 1.13 lakh cr in April, highest ever

New Delhi, May 1 (PTI) GST revenue mop-up scaled a monthly record high of over Rs 1.13 lakh crore in April, an increase of 10 per cent over the collection in the year-ago period, on the back of anti-evasion steps taken by tax officers.

Total number of summary sales return GSTR-3B filed for the month of March up to April 30 stood at 72.13 lakh.

April 2019 is the second consecutive month when Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection exceeded Rs 1 lakh crore. In March, the mop-up was Rs 1.06 lakh crore.

India: Court summons Union minister Naik as witness in cheating case

Panaji, May 1 (PTI) A Goa court on Wednesday issued summons against Union minister and North Goa MP Shripad Naik directing him to depose as a witnesses in a cheating case registered against his former staffer last year.

Panaji Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Vijayalaxmi Shivolkar directed Naik to appear in person by June 3.

Iran oil tanker breaks down in Red Sea off Saudi coast

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — An Iranian oil tanker carrying over 1 million barrels of fuel oil suffered a malfunction in the Red Sea off the coast of Saudi Arabia, authorities said Thursday, raising concerns that the vessel could be leaking.

The incident involving the Happiness I came as U.S. oil exemptions for Iranian crude oil purchases expired, part of President Donald Trump’s maximalist approach against Tehran.

Indian Polls: EC notice to Sidhu for remarks against PM

New Delhi, May 1 (PTI) The Election Commission has issued a show cause notice to Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu for his remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Citing a complaint by a BJP worker in Gujarat, the EC notice reproduced excerpts of his speech in which the Congress star campaigner had described the prime minister as a 'thief' while addressing an election meeting on April 17 in Ahmedabad.

Militants shell city in Latakia, one Syrian killed

TASS, May 2:  Militants from extremist groups shelled the outskirts of the Jebla city in Syria’s Latakia province on Thursday, the SANA news agency reported.

One Syrian was killed and four others were wounded when a mortar shell exploded near Bakhdarma.

The shelling from multiple rocket launcher systems was carried out by armed groups based in the area close to Turkey in the de-escalation zone in the northwest of the Idlib province.

Pakistan summons Afghan envoy over cross-border attack

ISLAMABAD, May 2 (Xinhua): Pakistan on Wednesday summoned Afghan envoy over a cross-border attack by militants from Afghan side of the border, which killed at least three soldiers and injured seven others, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry said.

A group of 60 to 70 militants from across the border from bases in Afghanistan attacked troops undertaking fencing effort along Pak-Afghan border in Alwara area of North Waziristan tribal district, the Pakistani army said earlier the day.

China improves IPR protection of cultural heritage

BEIJING, May 2 (Xinhua): China has strengthened the intellectual property rights (IPR) protection of traditional culture, crafts and intangible cultural heritage, according to a report from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

The report recalled the inscription of China's Lum medicinal bathing of Sowa Rigpa on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2018.

Russia, Uzbekistan coordinate site for construction of nuclear power plant

TASHKENT, May 2. /TASS/: The site for the construction of the first nuclear power station in Uzbekistan under Rosatom’s project has been coordinated, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told journalists on Thursday.

"An agreement was reached on the site [for the nuclear power plant’s construction]," he said.

India: Will kill 100 Naxals to avenge Gadchiroli attack: Yogi

Cyclone Fani in India: 81 trains cancelled, 2 diverted

New Delhi, May 1 (PTI) Railways has cancelled 81 trains and diverted two more in view of cyclone "Fani", which is likely to affect 19 districts of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal, besides Kolkata.

The railways said that it will grant full refund to passengers for the cancelled or diverted trains if the tickets are produced for cancellation within three days from scheduled date of journey.

Four injured after man opens gunfire in Moscow

MOSCOW, May 2. /TASS/: Police have detained a man who went on a shooting spree in Moscow, wounding four people, the Interior Ministry’s press service told TASS on Thursday.

The shooting occurred at 1.00 a.m. in the town of Moskovsky, in Moscow’s southwest. Police, who arrived at the scene, found out that a conflict had broken out at a dog area among several citizens.

"One of them rushed home, took a pump-action shotgun, according to preliminary information, and shot his opponents several times. Four people were wounded," the police said.
