Trump sues banks to block House subpoenas for records

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump has filed suit against Deutsche Bank and Capital One in an attempt to block congressional subpoenas for his business records.

The lawsuit by Trump, sons Donald Jr. and Eric and daughter Ivanka, was filed Monday in federal court in Manhattan. The Trump Organization and the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust are among the other plaintiffs.

Two House committees subpoenaed Deutsche Bank and several other financial institutions earlier this month as part of investigations into Trump’s finances.

Families of Boeing 737 MAX crash victims file suit against Boeing in Chicago

CHICAGO, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Two families filed lawsuits against Boeing in Chicago on Monday over the 737 MAX crashes that killed 346 people, the same day when Boeing held its shareholders meeting at the James Simpson Theatre in the Field Museum of Natural History in downtown Chicago.

New Zealand: Bomb scare and an arrest in Christchurch

New Zealand police arrested a man in Christchurch on Thursday following reports of a suspicious item at a property in the city, where 50 people at two mosques were killed by a lone gunman in March.

Police said a 33-year-old man was being questioned in relation to the incident in a residential neighborhood of the city.

"Police have located a package containing a suspected explosive device and ammunition at a vacant address," Canterbury District Commander Superintendent John Price said in a statement. 

India: Six Naxal terrorists held in Chhattisgarh

Dantewada, Apr 29 (PTI) Six naxals, including a woman, were arrested Monday from two places in Chhattigsarh's Dantewada district, police said.

Of them, three ultras who were allegedly involved in the October 2018 Nilawaya attack in which three policemen and a Doordarshan cameraman were killed in Dantewada, were apprehended from Nilawaya area under Aranpur police station limits, said Dantewada Superintendent of Police Abhishek Pallava.

Boeing denies "intentional" deactivation of alert feature on 737 MAX

SAN FRANCISCO, April 29 (Xinhua) -- The Boeing Company denied on Monday that it had intentionally deactivated an alert feature linked to the angle of attack (AOA) indicator on its 737 MAX airplanes.

The denial came in the wake of media reports alleging the top U.S. aircraft maker had failed to disclose the sensors were turned off before two fatal air crashes in six months.

Australia’s Nine media sells 170 newspapers for $81 million

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — A major Australian media company announced on Tuesday it has agreed to sell 170 regional and rural newspapers for 115 million Australian dollars ($81 million).

Nine Entertainment said it signed an agreement to sell the newspapers to shareholder Antony Catalano and Thorney Investment Group. The sale is to be completed by June 30.

Catalano last year took court action in a failed attempt to block the merger of Nine, a television network, with Fairfax Media, Australia’s largest newspaper publisher after News Corp.

U.S., Turkey conduct joint naval exercise in Black Sea

WASHINGTON, April 29 (Xinhua) -- U.S. destroyer U.S.S. Ross conducted a joint naval exercise with Turkish vessels and aircraft in the Black Sea on Saturday, the U.S. Navy said in a statement on Monday.

The statement noted that the U.S. Navy routinely practices with allies and partners in the Black Sea, thereby enhancing regional maritime stability, combined readiness and naval capability.

Earlier this month, NATO foreign ministers in Washington agreed on a series of measures to counter Russia in the Black Sea region.

Sri Lanka lifts social media ban imposed after Easter blasts

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Sri Lanka’s president lifted a nationwide ban on social media sites Tuesday, a day after he used emergency powers to ban veils worn by conservative Muslim women as part of a security clampdown following Easter suicide bomb attacks.

President Maithripala Sirisena ended the blocking of Facebook, WhatsApp, YouTube and other popular sites, but asked the public to “act in a responsible manner” on social media, according to a government statement.

China upgrades 5th edition of its currency

BEIJING, April 29 (Xinhua) -- The People's Bank of China (PBOC), the central bank, has upgraded the fifth edition of the renminbi (RMB), the Chinese currency, and on Monday announced the issuing of the new batch from Aug. 30.

The new issuance will include notes with a face value of 50 yuan (about 7 U.S. dollars), 20 yuan, 10 yuan and one yuan, and coins valued one yuan, 50 fen and 10 fen.

Compared with the current series in circulation, the new batch will see brighter colors and adjusted patterns with enhanced anti-conterfeiting feature, a PBOC official said.

China defends Xinjiang crackdown after UN chief raises issue

Beijing, Apr 30 (AFP) China Tuesday rejected "any interference" in its internal affairs after UN chief Antonio Guterres raised the plight of ethnic Uighurs in the restive Xinjiang region during a visit to Beijing.

Guterres had been under pressure from rights groups to publicly confront Beijing over the mass detention of Uighurs and other mostly Muslim Turkic-speaking minorities in Xinjiang during his trip.
