India: Bedi 'cannot interfere' in day-to-day affairs of elected govt: HC

Chennai, Apr 30 (PTI) In a setback to Kiran Bedi, the Madras High Court Tuesday held that the Puducherry Lt Governor "cannot interfere" in the day-to-day affairs of the elected government of the Union Territory.

Justice R Mahadevan pronounced the verdict on a petition by K Laksminarayanan, a Congress MLA, challenging two communications issued in January and June, 2017, by the Ministry of Home Affairs "elevating" the power of the administrator.

He also set aside two communications of the Union government elevating the power of the Lt Governor.

India: SC dismisses curative petition for Kohinoor diamond

New Delhi, Apr 29 (PTI) The Supreme Court has given the legal burial to a case which had sought judicial intervention to reclaim the 108-carat Kohinoor diamond from the United Kingdom.

A five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi dismissed a curative petition seeking to re-examine its 2017 verdict in which it had said that it cannot pass order for reclaiming Kohinoor diamond from the UK or to stop it from being auctioned.

Indian Polls: Kejriwal endorses BSF jawan against Modi in Varansi

New Delhi, Apr 30 (PTI) Lauding former BSF constable Tej Bahadur Yadav for "challenging" Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Varanasi, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Tuesday said there is "something in the soil of Haryana", the state from where the sacked jawan hails.

In a tweet, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener said that in the 2014 general elections too, someone from Haryana-- referring to himself-- had taken on Modi in Varanasi.

India: Even guards at PM's house will say "chowkidar chor hai"

Patharia (MP), Apr 30 (PTI) Stepping up his attack on Narendra Modi, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi Tuesday said even security personnel guarding the prime minister's official residence in Delhi may say the "chowkidar" (watchman) is a "chor" (thief).

Addressing a poll rally here in Damoh district of Madhya Pradesh, Gandhi also reiterated his allegations over the Rafale jet purchase deal.

Indian MHA notice on Rahul Gandhi's citizenship rubbish: Priyanka Gandhi

Amethi (UP), Apr 30 (PTI) Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra Tuesday termed as "rubbish" the MHA notice to her brother and Congress president Rahul Gandhi on the citizenship issue, saying all know that he was born and raised here.

"I have never heard such rubbish. All know Rahul Gandhi was born, raised here," she said.

"The entire country knows he was born before them...he was brought up before them..he grew up before them...what rubbish is this?" Priyanka shot back when asked about the notice issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

India: High temperature checked bumper voting

Kanpur: Scorching sun halted enthusiasm of the voters on Monday. In the morning the voters including the women came out of their houses. Some who reached at the booth no 221 in Cantt area were denied voting for they carried mobile with them. 

Rising temperature in the day lessened the voters' enthusiasm and this remained main cause behind low percentage of voting in the parliamentary election this year. The noon time completely hindered the voters to move. 

More than 300,000 Venezuelan children in Colombia need humanitarian aid: UNICEF

UNITED NATIONS, April 29 (Xinhua) -- The UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) said Monday that at least 327,000 children from Venezuela are living as migrants and refugees in Colombia, warning that their health, education, protection and well-being will be in jeopardy without increased support.

According to UNICEF's press release, the economic and political situation in Venezuela has caused an estimated 3.7 million Venezuelans to leave their homes for Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and other countries in the region.

India: Woman Naxal terrorist carrying Rs 5 lakh bounty held

Dantewada, Apr 30 (PTI) A naxal, who was carrying a reward of Rs 5 lakh on her head for her alleged involvement in launching attacks on security forces and killing villagers, was arrested Tuesday in Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district, police said.

The ultra, identified as Kosi alias Mangli, is a member of the Malangir area committee of Maoists, a police official said.

Indian DM awards contracts for 8 anti-submarine shallow water crafts

NEW DELHI, April 30 (Xinhua) -- India's defense ministry has given a contract to build eight anti-submarine warfare shallow water crafts for Indian navy to state-owned Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE), officials said Monday.

"The contract worth INR 6,311.32 crore (903 million U. S. dollars) was signed today by joint secretary and acquisition manager (Maritime Systems) Ravi Kant on behalf of Ministry of Defence and S S Dogra, Director (Finance), on behalf of GRSE, in New Delhi," a statement issued by defense ministry said.

India: 19-year-old woman raped in moving car in Shimla

Shimla, Apr 29 (PTI) A 19-year-old woman was allegedly raped in a moving car here, police said Monday.

The woman lodged a complaint through Gudiya helpline 1515 and alleged that she was raped by a person in the moving car at around 10 pm on Sunday, Deputy Superintendent of Police Pramod Shukla said.

In the complaint, the woman stated that the incident took place when she was coming from Mall road on foot towards an area falling under the Dhalli police station limits, Shukla said.

Police, FBI thwart Army veteran’s plan to bomb Nazi rally

LOS ANGELES (AP) — An Army veteran who converted to Islam and discussed launching various terror attacks throughout Southern California was arrested as he plotted to bomb a white supremacist rally as retribution for the New Zealand mosque attacks, federal prosecutors said Monday.

Mark Domingo, an infantryman who served a combat stint in Afghanistan, was arrested Friday after visiting a park in Long Beach where authorities said he planned to plant home-made explosive devices made with nail-filled pressure cookers in advance of a Nazi rally scheduled Sunday.
