Huawei tops corporate patent applications in 2018: WIPO

GENEVA, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese telecoms giant Huawei Technologies was the top corporate filer of international patent applications in 2018, leading an Asia-based innovation surge accounting for over half of the applications submitted at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) last year, WIPO said on Tuesday.

Netflix Indian series on notorious India gang-rape murder case

Roundup cancer case: US jury deals blow to Bayer

19 Mar 2019; DW: A US jury concluded on Tuesday that the Roundup weed killer was a "substantial factor" in causing cancer in a 70-year-old California man.

The ruling is a blow to Bayer, whose subsidiary Monsanto makes the herbicide. The trial could pave the way for more cases linking glyphosate in Roundup to the development of cancer.

UK police arrest wealthy Indian jeweler Nirav Modi

LONDON (AP) — Fugitive diamond tycoon Nirav Modi has been arrested in London at the request of Indian authorities.

The Metropolitan Police force says 48-year-old Modi was detained Tuesday in central London and held overnight in custody.

He is due to appear at London’s Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

A jeweler to Bollywood stars, Modi is wanted in India over allegations of banking fraud. Last year the international police organization Interpol issued a “red notice” for his arrest.

Kashmir: Omar demands punishment for teacher's custodial death

Srinagar, Mar 19; PTI/GANASHAKTI:  National Conference vice-president Omar Abdullah on Tuesday demanded a time-bound investigation into the custodial death of a school teacher in Jammu and Kashmir and exemplary punishment to those responsible for the death.

"I had hoped custodial deaths were a thing of our dark past. This is an unacceptable development & must be investigated in a transparent, time bound manner. Exemplary punishment must be handed out to the killers of this young man," Abdullah tweeted.

India: flight safety at risk due to non-payment: Jet Airways' engineers

Mumbai, Mar 19; PTI/GANASHAKTI:  Cash-starved Jet Airways on Tuesday alleged that non-payment of salaries had adversely affected its members' psychological condition, which puts the safety of the airline's flight operations at risk.

In a communication to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the Jet Airways Aircraft Maintenance Engineers' Association (JAMEWA) sought the aviation regulator's intervention in recovering the dues, saying the management's failure to keep its commitment of clearing their salary by March had "shaken" their faith in the company.

Pakistan court mulls options for recording Musharraf's statement

Islamabad, Mar 19 (PTI) A special court hearing the treason case against Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday ordered the preparation of a questionnaire for the former military ruler and sought assistance to determine whether or not he can record his statement via video link.

The previous Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government had filed the treason case against the ex-army chief general (retd) Musharraf in 2013 over the imposition of extra-constitutional emergency in November 2007.

Jet pilots threaten to stop flying, set Mar 31 deadline on bailout, salaries

Mumbai, Mar 19 (PTI) The umbrella body of the domestic pilots of the nearly crippled Jet Airways Tuesday threatened to stop flying from April 1, if the resolution plan is delayed and salary dues are not cleared by the end of this month.

The decision was taken at the annual meeting of Jet Airways domestic pilots body National Aviators Guild after a meeting here lasting for over 90 minutes.

Kazakh President Nazarbayev resigns

ASTANA, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev announced his sudden resignation on Tuesday after nearly three decades of leadership in the Central Asian country.

"As the founder of an independent Kazakh state, I see my future task in ensuring a new generation of leaders coming to power who will continue the transformations being carried out in the country," Nazarbayev said in a statement before signing a decree terminating his presidency from March 20.

Bangladesh: Awami League leader shot dead

Dhaka, Mar 19; PTI/GANASHAKTI:  Unidentified assailants gunned down a local leader of the ruling Awami League in front of his family in the southeastern Bangladesh on Tuesday, a day after seven election and security officials were shot dead while returning from a remote polling centre

Suresh Kanti Tanchangya, Bilaichhari upazila president of the Awami League, was gunned down around 9:30 am in Alikhong area in Rangamati district, police said

He, along with his family, was coming to Bilaichhari on boat this morning, they said.
