India: Farmers on indefinite fast in Noida

Noida (UP), Feb 26 (PTI) After over two weeks of sit-in demonstration, some farmers here have launched an indefinite fast to press for their demands, including enhanced compensation in lieu of their land acquired by the Noida Authority over the years.

Scores of farmers, under the banner of 'Kisan Astitva Bachao Andolan', have been protesting outside the authority office in Sector 6 since February 12. Some farmers launched the indefinite fast on Monday.

Jury convicted terrorist in Oklahoma City federal bomb plot trial

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A 24-year-old man is guilty of trying to detonate what he believed was an explosives-laden van outside an Oklahoma City bank, a federal jury ruled Monday.

Jurors convicted Jerry Drake Varnell, of Sayre, of attempting to use an explosive device to damage a building and attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction.

Prosecutors alleged that Varnell planned to detonate what he thought was a half-ton (450-kilogram) vehicle bomb on Aug. 12, 2017.

Iranian FM seemingly announces resignation via social media

TEHRAN, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif seemed to have announced his resignation unexpectedly on Monday through social media.

"Thanks for the great and brave Iranians and my colleagues, but I apologize for my failure to serve you and some flaws in my work," Zarif said on his Instagram account.

He also posted a photograph with captions.

Media reports said a foreign ministry spokesman, Abbas Mousavi, confirmed minutes later that Zarif had resigned but gave no reason for his departure.

Top pope aide Cardinal Pell convicted of child sex crimes

26 Feb 2019; AFP: Australian Cardinal George Pell, one of Pope Francis' closest advisors, has been found guilty of sexually assaulting two choirboys, becoming the most senior Catholic cleric ever convicted of child sex crimes.

An Australian jury unanimously found Pell guilty in December on one count of sexual abuse and four counts of indecent assault against two boys at Saint Patrick's Cathedral in Melbourne in the 1990s.

Lima Group does not support military intervention in Venezuela — Brazil's vice president

BOGOTA, February 25. /TASS/. The Lima Group countries do not support a military intervention in Venezuela, Brazilian Vice President Antonio Hamilton Mourao said on Monday.

"No one [in the Lima Group] supports a military solution to the situation [in Venezuela]," Mourao said.

The Brazilian vice president noted that "it is necessary to look for other ways to deliver humanitarian aid to Venezuela."

Brazil has no intention of allowing the United States to use its territory for a military operation against the Venezuelan government, Mourao stressed.

Humanitarian aid for Venezuela needs UN oversight: Uruguay

MONTEVIDEO, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Any humanitarian aid for Venezuela should be delivered under the oversight of the United Nations (UN), Uruguay's Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Ariel Bergamino said on Monday.

"We believe the humanitarian aid should be delivered in keeping with the UN protocols, in order not to politicize it or create situations like Saturday's," Bergamino told state-run radio network RNU.

House to vote on measure revoking Trump’s emergency order

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats are moving quickly to try to roll back President Donald Trump’s declaration of a national emergency to siphon billions of dollars from the military to fund construction of a fence along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Tuesday’s vote in the Democratic-controlled House comes on legislation to revoke Trump’s executive order from earlier this month and would send it to the Republican-held Senate, where it would take only a handful of GOP defections to pass it.

Cubans approve new constitution confirming Communist Party power

26 Feb 2019; DW: Cubans overwhelmingly approved a new constitution that preserves a one-party socialist state while implementing modest economic and social reforms, the electoral commission announced Monday. 

More than 86 percent of voters backed the changes in Sunday’s referendum, while nine percent opposed.  Around four percent of ballots were declared invalid. Electoral authorities said 84 percent of 8.7 million eligible voters cast ballots. 

White House threatens to veto bills enhancing background check for gun purchases

WASHINGTON, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- The White House said Monday two bills that enhance background check for gun purchases would be vetoed if passed by congress.

"If H.R. 8, or H.R. 1112, are presented to the president, his advisors would recommend he veto the bill," it said in a statement, referring to the bills by their house resolution numbers.

H.R. 8, also known as Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019, would require that certain transfers, loans, gifts, and sales of firearms be processed by a federally licensed importer, manufacturer, or dealer of firearms.
