TOKYO (AP) — Japan faces unforeseen risks in guiding economic policy as its population of about 126 million ages and declines, the governor of its central bank said Thursday.

Bank of Japan Gov. Haruhiko Kuroda told fellow financial leaders Thursday that policies must be devised to prevent the shrinking population from hindering economic growth.

China hits back at criticism of its detention of Canadians

BEIJING (AP) — China minced no words on Thursday as it rejected an accusation by Canada’s foreign minister that its detentions of Canadians pose a threat to all countries.

“I think your foreign minister may be in a hurry, and can’t help speaking without thinking,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in response to a question from a Canadian journalist. “What threat has China posed to Canada?”

Greek gov't wins confidence vote, ahead of Macedonia name deal

ATHENS, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- The government of Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras won a confidence vote in the Greek parliament on Wednesday, while a new crucial vote for the ratification of the Macedonia name deal will follow it in the coming days.

A total of 151 lawmakers voted to back the government, while 148 voted against and one was absent during the roll call voting in the 300-member strong assembly, which was broadcast live on Greek national broadcaster ERT.

India: Left students union to march to Parliament over communalism, privatisation of education

New Delhi, Jan 16; PTI: Alleging communalism of education, threat to campus democracy and privatisation of education, Left students' unions will march to Parliament on February 18 against the government, a statement from the unions said Wednesday.

The unions, including SFI, AISF, AIDSO, PSU and AISM, have made a slew of demands from the government for the education sector.

Barring PDP, all parties want early polls in Jammu & Kashmir

Jammu, Jan 16 (PTI) Batting for early assembly elections, Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik has said all political parties, except Mehbooba Mufti-led Peoples Democratic Party, want early polls.

The governor, however, hastened to add that it is the Election Commission of India, which has the mandate to hold the polls and decide the schedule.

India: Owners of stray cattle to face Rs 5,000 penalty

Noida, Jan 16 (PTI) The Noida Authority on Wednesday doubled the penalty imposed on owners of animals and cattle found roaming at public places and roads in the city, officials said.

So far, a penalty of Rs 2,500 is imposed on offenders, besides another Rs 1,000 which is remitted with the authority, the officials said.

Now, they will be required to pay Rs 5,000, the Noida Authority said in a statement.

India: Scolded for mobile addiction, girl hangs herself, dies

Mumbai, Jan 16 (PTI) A 14-year-old girl, who allegedly tried to kill herself after being admonished for watching videos on mobile phone, died at a hospital here after battling for life for three days, the police said Wednesday.

The family resides in Bhoiwada, central Mumbai. The police did not disclose the girl's name as she was minor.

Last Thursday the girl's mother chided her for watching videos on mobile phone all the time, a police official said.

Russia’s Investigative Committee confirms gas leak in Shakhty, no explosives found

MOSCOW, January 16. /TASS/. Russia’s Investigative Committee has found evidence proving a gas leak triggered an explosion in a residential building in the southern Russian town of Shakhty, but no residues of explosive devices were spotted at the scene, the committee’s Spokeswoman Svetlana Petrenko told reporters on Wednesday.

"Staff members of the Investigative Committee’s Main Forensics Department did not find any residues of explosives while searching the crime scene with a gas analyzer. Chemical examinations are to be done on collected wipe samples," she said.

Naxal terrorists torch passenger bus in India

Raipur, Jan 16 (PTI) A group of Naxals allegedly torched a bus in Kasoli village in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh on Wednesday, after asking passengers to alight, police said.

Three Naxals were arrested in connection with the incident, police said.

Talking to PTI, Dantewada Superintendent of Police Abhishek Pallav said the incident took place in Geedam tehsil in the district in the morning.
