LONDON; 20 Oct 2018; (AP) — Tens of thousands of protesters marched through central London on Saturday to demand a new referendum on Britain’s departure from the European Union.

Organizers want the public to have a final say on the government’s Brexit deal with the EU, arguing that new facts have come to light about the costs and complexity of Britain’s exit from the bloc since Britons voted to leave in 2016.

Australia’s ruling coalition forced into minority government

SYDNEY; 20 Oct 2018; (AP) — Australia’s ruling coalition was forced into minority government on Saturday after a massive swing against its senior partner, the Liberal Party, in a by-election for the seat of the prime minister the party itself had dismissed.

In a stinging backlash from the electorate after the fourth toppling of an Australian leader by internal party vote in just eight years, a swing of more than 20 percent against the sitting Liberals propelled independent candidate Kerryn Phelps to a decisive victory.

National Slow Down Day observed in Ireland

DUBLIN, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Irish police on Friday launched a 24-hour nation-wide operation to crack down on speeding to mark the country's National Slow Down Day.

The operation, which kicked off at 7:00 a.m. Friday morning, is aimed at reducing the number of speed-related collisions on the Irish roads.

The operation consists of high visibility speed enforcement over 1,000 enforcement zones across the country as well as the delivery of road safety messages to motorists through the use of the national, local and social media, said the police.

Afghans vote in parliamentary elections amid tight security

KABUL, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Millions of Afghan voters cast their ballots on Saturday for long-delayed parliamentary elections in the militancy-plagued country amid reports of security threats and irregularities.

The polling, according to the Independent Election Commission (IEC), started at 7:00 a.m. local time and will continue until 4:00 p.m. local time.

The voting, according to the IEC, continued smoothly as of midday amid tight security.

The IEC is likely to extend the voting time as scores of polling centers opened later than the expected time in the morning.

BJP councillor arrested for criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty

Meerut; A BJP councillor named Munish Kumar from Meerut has been arrested for assaulting a Sub-Inspector after a video showing him thrashing and abusing a Sub-Inspector went viral.

According to The Indian Express, “The sub-inspector, who was accompanied by a lady lawyer, got into an argument with a waiter which later turned violent as Kumar intervened. The councillor could be heard accusing the cop of being drunk and also hurled abuses at him, to which the lady lawyer retaliated similarly.”

India: House of activist Rehana attacked

Kochi, Oct 20 (PTI) Activist Rehana Fathima's house was allegedly vandalised by unidentified persons while she was attempting to reach the Ayyappa temple in Sabarimala on Friday, police said.

She had made a failed attempt to reach the temple with heavy police protection.

Police said Saturday that the attackers reached Fatima's house in Panambilly Nagar here while she was climbing the hills.

India: 3 Naxal terrorists gunned down by security forces in C'garh

Raipur, Oct 20 (PTI) Three Naxals were gunned down in an encounter with security forces in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh Saturday, police said.

The skirmish took place around 9.30 am in the forest near Madpal village under Mirtur police station limits when a team of District Reserve Guard (DRG) was out on an anti-Naxal operation, Bijapur Superintendent of Police, Mohit Garg told PTI.

India: 37 trains cancelled, 16 diverted day after Amritsar tragedy

New Delhi, Oct 20 : The railways cancelled 37 trains and diverted 16 trains on Saturday, a day after Dussehra revellers were mowed down by a train while they were watching the burning of a Ravan effigy while standing on the tracks near Amritsar, officials said.

Sixty-one people were killed and more than 70 injured in the tragedy.

India: Two kashmiris killed by Indian security forces

Srinagar, Oct 19 (PTI) Two unidentified militants were killed Friday in a shootout with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district, police said.

Security forces signalled a sports utility vehicle (SUV) to stop at Kraalhaar in Baramulla but the militants travelling in it opened fire at them, a police spokesman said.

He added the security forces retaliated and neutralised the two ultras.

India: Muzaffarnagar woman killed over dowry

Muzaffarnagar, Oct 18 (PTI) A 28-year-old woman was allegedly poisoned to death by her in-laws over dowry demand at Nawla village in Muzzafarnagar, police said Thursday.

Circle Officer Rajive Kumar Singh said a case has been registered against the woman's husband Nitin kumar, father in-law Rakesh, mother in-law Dulari and brother in-law Sachin.

He said they are absconding.

Minu married Nitin four years ago.

India: No 2014-like wave in the country now: Uddhav Thackeray

Mumbai, Oct 18 (PTI) In an apparent dig at the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray said Thursday that there was no "wave" in the country like the one in 2014.

In 2014, the BJP's success in Lok Sabha elections had been widely attributed to a "Modi wave".

Thackeray was addressing party workers at the Sena's annual Dussehra rally at Shivaji Park here.

"There is no wave as it was in 2014," he said, suggesting that the BJP would not be able to replicate its 2014 success in the Lok Sabha elections next year.
