China's Xi Jinping secures historic third term in office

23 October 2022; TRT: Xi Jinping has secured a historic third term as China's leader, state media reported, after a Communist Party Congress in which he cemented his position as the nation's most influential leader since founder Mao Zedong.

The Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party elected Xi as its general secretary for another five-year term on Sunday, Xinhua reported, tilting the country decisively back towards one-man rule after decades of power-sharing among its elite.

Iran, Turkey reach new agreement on gas export

Tehran, IRNA – The head of dispatching operations at the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), following the recent meeting between The National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC) officials with Botas, Turkey's state oil and gas company, said on Sunday that Tehran and Ankara have reached a new agreement on gas export contract.

Mohammadreza Joulaei referring to the new agreement said that, according to it, all technical, operational and executive activities of gas export to Turkey, in the next 6 months will be done with the coordination of both sides.

UAE imposes visa ban on Nigeria citizens, rejects applications

23 October 2022; MEMO: The UAE immigration authorities announced on Friday a visa ban on Nigerians looking to enter the country, adding that all submitted applications had been rejected with fees non-refundable.

According to a notice issued to its trading partners in Nigeria which includes travel agents, authorities in the emirate of Dubai declared that "All Dubai applications submitted are now rejected. It is general for Nigerians and approvals are on hold at the moment."

USA: Elon Musk plans to cut 75% of Twitter workforce: Report

San Francisco, Oct 21 (AP) Elon Musk plans to lay off most of Twitter's workforce if and when he becomes owner of the social media company, according to a report by The Washington Post.

Musk has told prospective investors in his Twitter purchase that he plans to cut nearly 75 per cent of Twitter's employee base of 7,500 workers, leaving the company with a skeleton crew, according to the report published on Thursday. The newspaper cited documents and unnamed sources familiar with the deliberations.

Pakistan taken off from FATF's grey list

New Delhi, Oct 21 (PTI) Pakistan has been taken off from the grey list of the FATF, the global watchdog on terror financing and money laundering, four years after the country was put in the infamous categorisation.

Significantly, for the first time, the FATF put Myanmar in the "high risk jurisdictions subject to a call for action", often referred to as the watchdog's black list.

Turkiye: 'We do not accept US threats, bullying against Saudi Arabia'

22 October 2022; MEMO: Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu has stated that his country cannot accept US threats to Saudi Arabia after the OPEC+ decision to reduce oil production.

In a statement reported by Turkiye's Anadolu Agency, Cavusoglu announced: "We are seeing that a country is threatening Saudi Arabia, and this bullying is not correct."

UK sanctions Iran over drones used by Russia in Ukraine

21 October 2022; MEMO: The UK, on Thursday, announced new sanctions on Iranian individuals and businesses "responsible for supplying Russia with kamikaze drones used to bombard Ukraine", Anadolu News Agency reports.

Russia is using the drones "to attack both civilian targets and critical infrastructure in Kyiv and across Ukraine, with the intention of cutting off Ukrainian people from energy, heating and water," a statement from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said.

Qatar in talks with Egypt to buy $2.5b of state-held stakes in Vodafone Egypt

20 October 2022; MEMO: Qatar is in talks with Egypt to buy $2.5 billion of state-held stakes in Vodafone Egypt, according to Bloomberg.

The Qatar Investment Authority, the Gulf state's sovereign wealth fund, plans to buy 20 per cent of Telecom Egypt's stake in Vodafone and several other unlisted companies.

USA: Biden to release 15M barrels from oil reserve

Washington, Oct 19 (AP-PTI) President Joe Biden will announce the release of 15 million barrels of oil from the US strategic reserve Wednesday as part of a response to recent production cuts announced by OPEC+ nations, and he will say more oil sales are possible this winter, as his administration rushes to be seen as pulling out all the stops ahead of next month's midterm elections.
