Harris enters the fray over democracy with visit to Tanzania

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (AP) — U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris will step onto the front lines of the battle for democracy in Africa on Thursday, spending time in Tanzania as it makes fragile progress toward restoring its reputation as a more inclusive government.

Samia Suluhu Hassan, Tanzania’s first female president, has undone some of the country’s more oppressive policies, such as a ban on opposition rallies, even though she came to power as a member of the ruling party.

India eyes more investments in Tanzania tech, engineering sectors

ARUSHA (Tanzania), March 21 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — INDIA is set to increase its investments in Tanzania in various sectors with a focus on technology and engineering.

Already, several reputed companies from the Asian country are operating in the country in engineering and allied projects.

This emerged in Arusha at the weekend during a business forum organised by the High Commission of India in association with the Tanzania-India Business Forum (TIBF) and local business stakeholders.

Tanzania set to sign 1tri/- deal to end power outages: Energy Minister

DAR ES SALAAM, Feb 5 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — THE Tanzanian government is on Feb 15 expected to sign an agreement of a project dubbed ‘Grid Imara’ worth about 1tri/- to restructure and stabilise the electricity situation in the country, Energy Minister January Makamba informed the National Assembly.

Moreover, the government is planning to carry out maintenance of the national grid to tackle power outages problems in many parts of the country. Makamba revealed this while contributing implementation report of the Parliamentary Committee for Energy and Minerals for the past one year.

17 killed, 12 injured in road accident in northern Tanzania

DAR ES SALAAM, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- At least 17 people were killed and 12 others injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a mini-bus in Tanzania's northern district of Korogwe in Tanga region, an official said on Saturday.

The Tanga regional commissioner, Omary Mgumba, said is a statement that the mini-bus was carrying 26 mourners and a body from Dar es Salaam to Moshi in Kilimanjaro region for burial when the accident occurred on Friday night.

Tanzanian women rebuild their lives after recovering from obstetric fistula

DAR ES SALAAM, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Seven women who have fully recovered from obstetric fistula treatment are busy in a room making high quality handmade bags, accessories and toys.

These women have benefited from the specialized healthcare services operating in Dar es Salaam and Moshi in Tanzania, sponsors by the Comprehensive Community Based Rehabilitation Tanzania (CCBRT), a locally registered non-governmental organization (NGO).

4 members of same family killed in road accident in Tanzania

DAR ES SALAAM, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Four members of a family were killed in a road accident on Saturday morning in Tanzania's eastern region of Morogoro, said an official.

Majid Mwanga, the Kilosa district commissioner in Morogoro region, said the accident occurred at around 9:20 a.m. local time when a salon car in which the family was travelling in collided head on with a truck at Dumila along the Morogoro-Dodoma highway.

"A mother and her baby, who were also members of the family, survived but they were injured," said Mwanga.

Tanzania, Chinese firms signed agreement on 506-km railway project

DAR ES SALAAM, Dec 25 (NNN-XINHUA) – Tanzania’s railway authorities, signed an agreement with two Chinese companies, for the second phase of the construction of the 506-km standard gauge railway (SGR), from Tabora to Kigoma region.

The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) and the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, together with the China Railway Construction Corporation Limited, signed the agreement, which was witnessed by Tanzanian President, Samia Suluhu Hassan, at the State House, in the port city of Dar es Salaam.

Tanzania: French government commits to support EAC-led process in DRC

DAR ES SALAAM, Dec 7 (NNN-KBC) — The French Ambassador to the United Republic of Tanzania, Nabil Hahjlaoui, pledged his country’s commitment to support EAC-Led Nairobi Process, on restoration of peace and security in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). 

Hahjlaoui made the disclosure when he met with the Secretary General of the EAC, Dr. Peter Mathuki, who paid a courtesy call on him at his residence in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. 

Hahjlaoui reiterated his country’s commitment to use its experience and help in any way necessary to bring peace back in Eastern DRC.  

Tanzania keen on SGR implementation

DODOMA (Tanzania), Nov 27 (NNN-DAILYNEWS) — PRIME Minister Kassim Majaliwa said that the government will ensure that the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project is built to agreed-upon standards and completed on time.

He stated that the railway’s construction is progressing well in all sections and that the government will ensure that it is not stalled and will address all indicators that could impede its implementation.

The Premier made the remarks in Dodoma while inspecting the development of the construction of the Dodoma main station in the Mkonze area.
