DAR ES SALAAM, April 17 (NNN-ALLAFRICA) — Tanzania has canceled this year’s April 26 national holiday celebration commemorating the 1964 merger of Tanganyika and Zanzibar to become Tanzania as the country’s coronavirus tally rises.

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa said the Union Day observance was called off because of the pandemic.

Majaliwa said President John Magufuli is redirecting the $217,000 set aside for the holiday celebrations to go toward fighting the coronavirus in the country.

DAR ES SALAAM, March 27 (NNN-AGENCIES) — Tanzanian President John Magufuli has said the general elections planned for October, in which he is expected to seek re-election, will go on despite the coronavirus outbreak.

He said there is also no reason for citizens to stop working.

“Work has to go on and that’s why even parliament is moving on with its schedule,” the Citizen newspaper quotes him as saying.

Magufuli recently said gatherings in churches and mosques have not been banned yet despite a coronavirus outbreak because that’s where “there is true healing.”

DAR ES SALAAM, Feb 15 (NNN-Xinhua) — Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa warned politicians to stop making misleading statements on the outbreak of the novel coronavirus Covid-19 in China.

“Politicians should stop making misleading statements on the virus that confuse members,” said Majaliwa shortly after attending Friday prayers in the capital city of Dodoma.

He gave the warning as infections reached more than 64,000 worldwide with a reported death toll of more than 1,500.

DAR ES SALAAM, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- UN Women, the United Nations organization dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women, is working in partnership with the government of Tanzania in the fight against gender-based violence, a senior official said on Sunday.

"Since this collaboration has started to be implemented cases of gender-based violence have started to drop down significantly," said Faustine Ndugulile, Tanzania's Deputy Minister for Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children.

DAR ES SALAAM (Reuters) - A Canadian man has died in a paragliding accident in Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, a popular tourist hotspot in East Africa, a Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) official said on Sunday.

He fell to his death after his parachute failed to open, Paschal Shelutete, senior assistant conservation commissioner at the state-run TANAPA told Reuters.

Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, is nearly 6,000 meters (20,000 ft) above sea level.

DAR ES SALAAM, Sept 7 (NNN-Xinhua) — Tanzanian President John Magufuli and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni on Friday inaugurated the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation (MNF) Building built by China Railway Construction Engineering Group (CRCEG).

Both presidents commended CRCEG for its “excellent job for putting up such a magnificent structure.” The 30-story building is a cooperative project of CRCEG, MNF and International Finance Corporation with a total investment of 150 million U.S. dollars.

DAR ES SALAAM, June 17 (Xinhua) -- A Tanzanian government senior official said on Monday that the contribution of minerals to the east African nation's gross domestic product (GDP) will reach 10 percent by 2025 given the current growth trend.

Dotto Biteko, Minister for Minerals, said the mineral sector's contribution to the GDP hit 5.07 percent in 2015 from about 3.5 percent in 2010 because of the reforms taken in the sector.
