India: Man gets 10 years RI for raping minor

Thane, Jan 28 (PTI) The district court here convicted and sentenced a 37-year-old man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a 17-year-old girl.

District and POCSO judge Hemant Patwardhan held Nagesh Vatore guilty of rape on charges under the Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences and sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.

Death Toll From India Bus Accident Rises To 26

MUMBAI, Jan 29 (NNN-PTI) — The death toll from a state transport bus accident on Tuesday afternoon, in India’s state of Maharashtra rose to 20, with 30 other injured passengers admitted to hospital, local police said.

The accident happened when the driver of the bus lost control, after one of the tyres burst, and it collided with a three-wheeler auto, and fell into a 70-foot well, at Malegaon, 271 km northeast of Mumbai. The well near the highway was close to an open-air laundromat or lavoir (wash house).

India: NIA team in Pune to take over Koregaon Bhima case probe

Pune, Jan 27 (PTI) A National Investigation Agency (NIA) team arrived in the city on Monday and began the process of taking over probe into the Koregaon-Bhima-Elgar Parishad case, police officials said here.

The three-member team of the central agency landed on Monday morning and later met officials of the city police handling the sensitive case, which has triggered a new round of war of words between ruling and opposition parties in Maharashtra, the sources said.

India: Over 300 students, ABVP activists march in support of CAA

Pune, Jan 28 (PTI) Over 300 students and members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad took out a rally in support of the Citizenship [Amendment] Act and National Register of Citizens in Maharashtra's Pune city on Tuesday.

Holding a 300-feet-long Indian flag, students and activists marched from Modern College's Ganesh Khind campus till the Shivaji Nagar campus, shouting slogans in support of the CAA and NRC.

India: Woman gang-raped; husband, 2 others arrested

Mumbai, Jan 26 (PTI) A 25-year-old man has been arrested by Jogeshwari police in the metropolis for allegedly orchestrating the gang-rape of his wife through two of his Facebook friends, an official said on Sunday.

The main accused is an autorickshaw driver hailing from neighbouring Palghar district while his two accomplices are employees of a pharma company here, he said.

India: Thane man booked for child marriage, rape

Palghar, Jan 25 (PTI) A Mumbai resident and some of his relatives have been booked in a Child Marriage Act case by Virar police in Maharashtra's Palghar district, an official said on Saturday.

Nikhil Gohil, from Mazgaon in the metropolis, has also been booked for rape under Indian Penal Code and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, said Palghar police spokesperson Hemant Katkar.

India: Five-year-old sexually assaulted in Matunga

Mumbai, Jan 25 (PTI) A five-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by an unidentified person at Matunga in Central Mumbai, police said on Saturday.

The incident came to light on Thursday morning, when the police received a call about girl lying unconscious at Arora Junction in Matunga, an official said.

India: All leaders know that their phones are tapped: Pawar

Mumbai, Jan 25 (PTI) NCP president Sharad Pawar on Saturday said that all political leaders know that their phones are tapped, which is why they do not think about it seriously.

His comments come a day after Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh accused the previous BJP-led state government of tapping phones of senior NCP and Congress leaders during the 2019 Lok Sabha and Assembly polls.

India: Shabana Azmi recovering well: Javed Akhtar

Mumbai, Jan 22 (PTI) Noted actor Shabana Azmi, who was injured in an accident last week, is "recovering well", her husband and veteran screenwriter Javed Akhtar said on Wednesday.

Azmi suffered head injuries when her car met with an accident on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on January 18. Akhtar was also there in the vehicle but escaped unhurt.
