Indian Rupee skids 20 paise as Iran attacks US forces

Mumbai, Jan 8 (PTI) The Indian rupee tumbled 20 paise to 72.02 against the US dollar in opening trade on Wednesday as Mideast tensions flared up after Iran fired rockets at US military bases in Iraq.

Asian markets dived while oil prices firmed up after Iran fired more than a dozen ballistic missiles at two Iraqi bases with US personnel in retaliation to the killing of its top general Qassem Soleimani.

Indian Police Files Case Against Woman For Holding “Free Kashmir” Placard

MUMBAI, Jan 8 (NNN-PTI) – Indian Police filed a first information report (FIR) against a woman, for holding “Free Kashmir” placard, during a protest at Gateway of India, late Tuesday, in Mumbai.

“We have filed a case against Mahek Mirza Prabhu, under Section 153b (Imputation, assertions prejudicial to national interest) under IPC (Indian Penal Code),” a city police official said.

So far, the police are scanning CCTV footage and other video evidences to get more details, but have not called her for a statement.

India: Protest at Pune university against JNU violence

Pune, Jan 6 (PTI) Members of various students and youth organisations staged a demonstration at the Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) here on Monday evening to denounce the violence at the JNU campus in New Delhi.

Maharashtra Minister and Congress leader Vishwajeet Kadam also took part in the protest.

Holding placards and shouting slogans, the agitators took part in the protests and condemned the attack on the JNU students and teachers.

India: Sensex nosedives 788 pts on US-Iran standoff

Mumbai, Jan 6 (PTI) The BSE benchmark Sensex crashed by nearly 788 points and the NSE Nifty tumbled around 234 points on Monday as heightened tensions in the Middle East kept investors on edge.

The 30-share BSE index ended at 40,676.63, dropping of 787.98 points, or 1.90 per cent. Similarly, the broader Nifty closed at 11,993.05, falling by 233.60 points, or 1.91 per cent.

On the Sensex chart, Bajaj Finance was the top loser, dropping 4.63 per cent, followed by SBI, IndusInd Bank, Maruti, HDFC, Hero MotoCorp, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank and Reliance Industries.

India: Demonstration against CAA in Pune

Pune, Jan 4 (PTI) A protest was staged against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) was held in Kothrud area here on Saturday.

Holding placards denouncing the CAA, NRC and the National Population Register (NPR), members of the Yuvak Kranti Dal, Professional Congress, National Students Union of India, Aam Admi Party and others took part in the protest.

India: Shirdi Sai temple earns Rs 17.42 cr in 11 days

Shirdi, Jan 4 (PTI) The 11-day holiday rush saw over 8 lakh visitors thronging the Saibaba Temple in Shirdi, which received Rs 17.42 crore in donations, Shri Saibaba Sansthan Trust (SSST) said on Saturday.

From December 23 last year to January 2, as many as 8.23 lakh devotees visited the famed temple at Shirdi in Maharashtra's Ahmednagar district, the trust's chief executive officer Deepak Mugalikar said.

India: Bollywood production manager held in sex racket

Mumbai, Jan 4 (PTI) A Bollywood production manager was arrested for his involvement in an alleged sex racket operating out of a four-star hotel in suburban Juhu here, police said on Saturday.

Acting on a tip-off, the Social Service (SS) branch raided Zed Luxury Residency Hotel on Friday, arrested Bollywood production manager Rajesh Kumar Lal and rescued two Uzbekistan nationals, an official said.

Earlier on December 23, the SS branch had rescued three women from a sex racket at the same hotel, he added.

India’s Adani Ports To Acquire Multi-Cargo Terminal

MUMBAI, Jan 4 (NNN-PTI) – India’s largest port developer, Adani Ports, said that, it will be acquiring a controlling stake of 75 percent in Krishnapatnam Port Company Limited (KPCL), that operates a multi-cargo terminal, on the country’s east coast, in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

The estimated enterprise value for the proposed acquisition is 1.89 billion U.S. dollars and the transaction is expected to be completed within 120 days, the company said, in its filing with the Bombay Stock Exchange.

India: Maha village grieves soldier killed in J-K encounter

Satara, Jan 2 (PTI) A pall of gloom descended on Mundhe village in Maharashtra's Satara district, following the death of Indian Army soldier Naik Sandip Raghunath Sawant, who was killed during a counter-insurgency operation in Jammu and Kashmir's Nowshera sector on Wednesday.

Sawant (29) and Rifleman Arjun Thapa Magar (25) were killed when the Army foiled an infiltration bid by heavily armed terrorists along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district on New Year's day.

India: Sewage cleaning job claims another two lives in Mumbai

Mumbai, Jan 1 (PTI) Two sanitation workers drowned in a sewage chamber in suburban Goregaon, the police said on Wednesday.

Last month, five deaths of sanitation workers had been reported in the city.

The latest tragedy took place near Hub Mall in Goregaon (East) on Tuesday afternoon, a police official said.
