Indian Polls: How the BJP crafted its campaign in prized Varanasi

Varanasi, May 17 (PTI) Voters may complain that the competitive zing was missing in the prime minister's constituency but the BJP had a clear-cut strategy to keep the campaign ship sailing -- entrusting senior leaders and celebrities to canvass for votes while a handful of carefully chosen lieutenants managed the back end.

A string of senior leaders such as Sushma Swaraj and Yogi Adityanath visited the town to address meetings and Bhojpuri showbiz stars Manoj Tiwari and Nirahua added a dash of glamour in the campaigning for the BJP's most prestigious seat.

India: Naidu meets Akhilesh, will call on Mayawati next

Lucknow, May 18 (PTI) TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu Saturday met Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav here and was set to call on Bahujan Samajwadi Party chief Mayawati later, continuing his efforts to put together a coalition to form the next government at the Centre.

He reached the state capital after meetings in New Delhi with Congress president Rahul Gandhi, CPI leaders G Sudhakar Reddy and D Raja, NCP chief Sharad Pawar and LJD leader Sharad Yadav.

How long will persist tanneries' closure, rue owners?

Kanpur: Anguished with closure of the tanneries the owners appear  extremely disappointed. Some of them even are trying to find other occupation for the livelihood. They are concerned at the longevity of the leather business which had been started by their ancestors in Jajmau area of the city. 

As regards the flow of tanneries' discharge into the river Ganga they in a very clear tone maintain that they are not the culprits. They pay the user charge for sending the discharge into the plant. 

Indian Polls: Outsiders threatening voters in Varanasi: Mayawati

Lucknow, May 17 (PTI) BSP chief Mayawati Friday alleged that outsiders are being used to lure and threaten voters in Varanasi to ensure a win for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and asked why the EC was not focusing on the constituency.

Slamming the Election Commission, she asked why the poll body was not keeping a watch on Varanasi like it was doing in West Bengal.

India: Mayawati comes out in support of Mamata Banerjee

Lucknow May 16 (PTI) Rallying behind Mamata Banerjee, BSP supremo Mayawati Thursday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah of targeting the West Bengal chief minister as part of a conspiracy and said it reflected a "dangerous attitude".

A day after the Election Commission curtailed campaigning in West Bengal, Mayawati charged that the poll body acted under pressure of the central government.

India: Man beaten to death by wife and in-laws in Shamli

Muzaffarnagar, May 16 (PTI) A 31-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death by his wife and in-laws over a family dispute in neighbouring Shamli district and his body was dumped in a drain, police said.

Harish was killed on Wednesday in Khedi Karmu village under Kotwali police station area in the district, Station House Officer (SHO) Subhash Rathore said.

A case of murder has been registered against four persons and the victim's wife Shivani along with a relative Shivam was arrested, the SHO said.

India: Modi's legacy as Gujarat CM burden on country's communal history

Lucknow, May 15 (PTI) BSP president Mayawati on Wednesday claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's legacy as the Gujarat chief minister is a black spot for himself and the BJP, as well as a burden on the communal history of the country.

Mayawati alleged that the prime minister had crossed all limits of decency in terming the Bahujan Samaj Party her personal property.

India: Cong alleges BJP hand in attack on Aditi Singh

New Delhi, May 15 (PTI) The Congress on Wednesday condemned the attack on its Rae Bareli legislator Aditi Singh, blaming it on what it called the "hired goons" of BJP in Uttar Pradesh.

It sought a judicial probe to nail the criminal conspiracy behind the incident.

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said the incident shows the true Modi-Shah model of governance in force in UP.

Indian Polls: Priyanka's Varanasi roadshow gathers big crowd

Varanasi (UP), May 15 (PTI) In a big show of strength in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's constituency, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra held a roadshow here Wednesday evening.

Priyanka Gandhi began the roadshow, which had a route similar to Modi's jamboree last month, by garlanding the statue of Madan Mohan Malviya at the gates of the Banaras Hindu University.

Modi had held a roadshow here on April 25, a day before he filed his nomination papers.
